LEADIN:
When it comes to learning a musical instrument then the Carilllon - with its bell-like sound and organ appearance - is not necessarily going to top most teenagers' wish lists - unless you're Peter Bray that is.
He's preparing to represent Australia in an international carillon competition in Belgium in July.
STORYLINE:
While many of his friends pursued more common instruments, like the guitar or piano, Peter Bray had other ideas.
"Lots of people say; 'Oh wow, that's the weirdest thing ever.' It's nothing like anything else," says Bray.
"You play with your fists, but you can also play with your hands to get a different effect, you have foot pedals."
Four years ago, Bray responded to a callout to come and try playing the carillon, an instrument that consists of multiple bells, often housed in a bell tower.
Now, the 19-year-old is on the roster of qualified carillonists.
"I just love how it's so different and it's so loud and it's the biggest instrument in the world. So, we're actually inside the instrument right now," he says.
Similar to Bray, his teacher Lyn Fuller learnt to play after seeing a newspaper ad in the 1990s.
"It was worded in such a way as I thought... I'm not sure I can do that. And then I picked it up again a week later, and I said; 'I can do that,'" she says.
As Canberra's lead carillonist Fuller is helping Bray perfect his skills.
"Peter is very receptive as a student, has lots of ideas and is able to interpret music really well," she says.
There are only two carillons in Australia, making Bray one of only a handful of young carillonists in the country.
"They are like a breath of fresh air and they bring new ideas to the place and they're very talented musically," says Fuller.
For example, Bray held a Star Wars themed concert in May last year.
"I'm working on Harry Potter at the moment, the main theme," he says.
Technology is also helping Bray to tap into international expertise. Each week, he has a skype session with a carillonist in Belgium.
"It's really weird, it was snowing the other day and he showed me out the window and it was something like 42 (degrees Celsius) here," says Bray.
In July, Bray will travel to Belgium to represent Australia at the prestigious Queen Fabiola carillon competition which is held every five years.
Until then, it means lots of practice and free concerts for lucky walkers around Lake Burley Griffin in the centre of Canberra.
