STORYLINE:
Italy's government on Friday allowed 18 rescued migrants, mainly women and children from sub-Saharan Africa, to disembark in Lampedusa, a small island south of Sicily.
The migrants, who had departed from Libya and were rescued approximately 30 miles (48.2 kilometres) off Libya's coast on May 15, had been waiting onboard the humanitarian rescue ship Sea-Watch 3 until Italy permitted their disembarkment.
47 migrants reportedly remained onboard the Sea-Watch 3.
According to Sea-Watch crew members, the conditions of those left onboard were worsening and the ship was experiencing rough seas.
So far, no other European country has allowed them to disembark elsewhere.
The disembarkment of the 18 came despite repeated efforts by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to not open Italy's ports to more migrants.
