30. SOUNDBITE (French) Luc Labenne, "Meteorite Hunter" and Expert:
"Here, we are talking about asteroids that are between Mars and Jupiter and among meteorites, pallasites are the most beautiful ones, considered as queens of meteorites. Because, when you cut it in slices and here, we have one big 1.5 kg slice and it is really very big, you have crystals that are letting the light go through in a mass of iron and nickel. It is a spectacular object when you slice it and it is very sought after."

"There are things I adore here, you have shots, x-rays of boots and hand gloves of Neil Armstrong. Those x-rays were allowing to verify that the stitching was fine, that something wasn't forgotten inside before Neil Armstrong left for the Moon and it is rather moving when you imagine that all that stayed on the Moon and this is a kind of a ghost witness of its boots and hand gloves."

For instance, if we know the place of its finding, if we know the place of the impact, if the meteorite is referenced - of course all that influences the value of the object, and its weight is important too."

LEADIN:
A collection of rare meteorites is set to be auctioned in Paris Monday (21 October 2019).
The sale, being staged by French auction house Hotel Drouot, is marking the 50th anniversary of man landing on the moon.
STORYLINE:
Two very expensive rocks from outer space.
On the left, the Saint-Aubin meteorite, weighing 157 kilograms and with an estimated price between 30 and 50-thousand euros (approx. $34-56-thousand USD).
And on the right, the Mont-Dieu meteorite, weighing 364 kilograms and worth up to 120-thousand euros (approx. 134-thousand US dollars).
To commemorate fifty years since man first stepped on the moon, Paris' famous Hotel Drouot auction house is hosting an auction, called "Space to Paris".
A selection of meteorites is taking centre stage. The Mont-Dieu and Saint Aubin meteorites are the most valuable of the lot.
"Both meteorites were discovered pretty recently," says meteorite hunter and expert Luc Labenne.
The finding of the Mont-Dieu rock by Jean-Luc Billard in 1994 led to a legal fight between the meteorite hunter and the French state over its ownership. After a three-year court battle, Billard won.
The original weight of the Mont-Dieu meteorite is estimated to have been around one tonne, making it one of the most significant meteorite discoveries in Europe.
The Saint-Aubin meteorite was found last year.
Experts estimate it is 4.5 billion-year-old and fell to Earth some 55-thousand years ago.
One of the smallest meteorites on display at the exhibition is one from Mars. It weighs only three grams.
At an estimated cost of 14-15 thousand euros (approx. $15-17 thousand USD), it holds the most value per gram and is claimed to be one of the most scientifically studied rocks.
"This meteorite from Mars is rather particular because laboratories are working very much on this one because we have a big part of the history of Mars that can be found in different fragments of this meteorite," says Labenne.
Other rare pieces include a "Golden Pallasite", a palasite-type meteorite consisting of roughly equal proportions of iron and olivine.
Pallasites are thought to be the most beautiful ones, considered to be "Queens of meteorites."
"Because, when you cut it in slices and here, we have one big 1.5 kg slice and it is really very big, you have crystals that are letting the light go through in a mass of iron and nickel. It is a spectacular object when you slice it and it is very sought after," says Labenne.
Scientific instruments, equipment, photographs of moon missions and celestial globes are also up for auction, along with artworks from different collections.
The market for extraterrestrial objects is booming - meteorites are rarer than some diamonds and their prices have begun to soar.
Four years ago, Drouot auction house organised a sale of a private collection of meteorites, some estimated prices doubled or even tripled during the auction.
"Regarding the market of meteorites, the rarity of the object, its composition on the scientific level and its notoriety on the market (makes its price). For instance, if we know the place of its finding, if we know the place of the impact, if the meteorite is referenced - of course all that influences the value of the object, and its weight is important too," says Christophe Lucien, an auctioneer for Drouot.
The auction will attract a variety of buyers.
Museums, wealthy collectors, scientists and the general public are expected to place bids.
Tanguy Lefebure, a jeweller from Paris, will also be bidding. He uses meteorite fragments in his creations.
"I bought several meteorites that I transformed into jewellery. I must say, it's charming because it has links to love... for instance, a young fiancée offered a pair of cufflinks with meteorites (to her future husband) with a message; 'For you, I'm ready to take stars out of the skies'," he says.
Art merchant Henri Ho is another potential buyer. He's interested in the beauty and rarity of the objects, even if the material is raw.
"Those pieces are falling out of the sky and it is not something we can find on Earth. Today it is very hard to find (meteorites) so I think I'll be interested (to buy) in the biggest pieces of meteorites here," says Ho.
