"We need to bring together knowledge, technology, and brain power from all around the world. The first three pilot cities should be created in Asia. This is what I have been repeatedly saying since last year, where the contradictions caused by industrial civilizations are most prominent. This involves building cities that are not only technologically driven, but also people centric. So we need to build a place of hope for the three billion people who will move to cities in the future."

The third is the baseline for limiting city boundaries to prevent the impact on nature and even culture by the sprawling of cities."

Participants in a sub-forum of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2019 visualized the future modern, new civic life that is built with new technologies and new energy by 2049.
Titled "A Sustainable Future for Rural Asia and Cities", the sub-forum heard a proposal raised by Ban Ki-moon, the BFA chairman and former United Nations Secretary-General, for building future cities on a trial basis in Asia.
So we need to build a place of hope for the three billion people who will move to cities in the future," said Ban Ki-moon.
A technology-driven and people-centered city is the consensus on future city reached by the guests participating in the forum.
Zhuang Shaoqin from China's Ministry of Natural Resources said that China's space development and governance, including urbanization, has entered into a new era of ecological civilization, which values the harmony between man and nature.
"We plan to draw three baselines in China. The first is the ecological red line for protecting the ecological system. The second is the baseline of permanent basic farmland to guarantee food security. The third is the baseline for limiting city boundaries to prevent the impact on nature and even culture by the sprawling of cities," said Zhuang, the ministry’s Chief Planner.
The participants agreed that 55 percent of the world's population live in cities and many cities suffer more or less from big city disease. In the future, the effective optimization of city functions through artificial intelligence may effectively cure the big city disease.
Wang Lu, vice present of China’s tech giant Baidu said: "New York City alone suffers traffic-related losses amounting to 220 billion U.S. dollars a year, about 5 percent of the GDP. We could come out with a three-dimensional solution by using big data that we are good at, maps, video analysis of traffic lights, and even driverless technology so that people would enjoy not only smart traffic but also smart travel."
Irina Bokova, former Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), stressed the importance of culture in city development, saying: "we cannot look at sustainable urban development and planning with all the elements of smart, of green, without a people-centered, without looking also at this aspect of culture and heritage."
With the theme "Shared Future, Concerted Action, Common Development," the BFA annual conference gathered leaders of the region to exchange views and seek consensuses on global governance from March 26 to 29.
