STORYLINE:
Theresa May says she will step down as U.K. Conservative Party leader on June 7, sparking a contest to become Britain's next prime minister.
May's authority as Conservative leader has been shredded by her loss of the party's parliamentary majority in a 2017 election and her failure to lead Britain out of the EU as promised.
Some from the party's powerful eurosceptic wing had suggested they wanted to replace May with a staunch Brexit supporter such as Boris Johnson, a former foreign secretary.
Contenders to the leadership role are starting to emerge inside the Conservative party.
Former London Mayor and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, former Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey and newly appointed International Development Secretary Rory Stewart have officially declared they are in the race to succeed May.
Other potential replacements include Home Secretary Savid Javid, Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, former Brexit Secretary Dominc Raab, Minister for the Cabinet Office David Lidington, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, and newly appointed Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt.
Home Secretary Savid Javid, the son of a Pakistani bus driver, took on the job after Amber Rudd resigned over the so called Windrush scandal.
Windrush dominated headlines in Britain for days and sparked intense criticism of the Conservative government's mistreatment of long-term U.K. residents wrongly caught up in the government's drive to reduce illegal immigration.
Javid served previously as Business Secretary under David Cameron and as Home Secretary he recently unveiled plans for a new espionage bill to curb hostile state activities from the likes of Russia, updating the Official Secrets Act and the laws on treason.
Amber Rudd served as Home Secretary from July 2016 to April 2018 but resigned over Windrush.
She remained supportive of Theresa May and was later named Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in November 2018 after the incumbent Esther McVey resigned. She backed May's deal despite voting to remain in the European Union.
She is pro-business, backs low taxes and a moderate approach to conservatism and has warned against extreme views within the Tory party to gain voters otherwise succumbing to the appeal of politicians like Nigel Farage of the Brexit Party.
David Lidington served as Secretary of State for Justice of the United Kingdom (2017–2018), and has been a Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster since January 2018. He is seen by many as May's de facto Deputy Prime Minister upping his profile as a candidate for the top job, but has denied being interested in the post.
Former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab stayed in his post for four months only after David Davis resigned. A supporter of the Leave camp, at 44 he is one of the youngest of the potential contenders. The former lawyer resigned over the draft Brexit agreement claiming it had "fatal flaws".
Chief Treasury Secretary Liz Truss has been a member of Parliament since 2010, serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education and Childcare and Enviroment Secretary under David Cameron.
She succeeded Michael Gove as Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor in 2016, being re-appointed under a cabinet reshuffle in June the next year to her current post.
She supports deregulation and low taxes and has backed building a million homes on the Green Belt, a series of areas protected from building development across England, to boost the economy.
She is pro-Brexit and has advocated leaving the European Union even without a deal.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has also been a member of Parliament since 2010 taking up several ministerial posts under David Cameron and May, before being named Culture Secretary in January 2018.
He moved portfolios to become Health Secretary in July that year after Jeremy Hunt's promotion to Foreign Secretary following Boris Johnson's resignation.
He has supported Theresa May's deal, urging collegues to back it irrespective of details on the terms of Britain's future relationship with the European Union.
He has said May's successor needs to be someone who looks beyond Brexit and takes on the country's future challenges with a centre ground approach.
Royal Naval Reservist (sub-lieutenant) Penny Mordaunt entered politics in 2010, holding three ministerial portfolios before becoming International Development Secretary at the same time as serving as Minister for Women and Equalities.
The 46 year-old was promoted to Defence Secretary, the first ever time the post has been held by a woman, following Gavin Williamson's dismissal over a security leak.
She campaigned for the Leave camp in the Brexit referendum.
