STORYLINE:
Marcel Hirscher won men's slalom gold for a third time in the space of four Alpine World Championships on Sunday, leading an all-Austrian podium in Are, Sweden.
Alpine combined gold medallist Alexis Pinturault was Hirscher's closest challenger at the halfway stage, 0.56-of-a-second off the pace, but the Frenchman slipped in his second run and finished in fourth place.
So Michael Matt held provisional first place with only Hirscher left to ski.
Hirscher was not to be denied though, recording a combined time of two minutes, 5.86 seconds to finish 0.65-of-a-second clear of Matt.
It was a seventh gold for Hirscher, taking him level with compatriot Toni Sailer for the most men's titles in World Championships history.
Marco Schwarz finished in third, picking up his third medal of these championships.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Hirscher, who picked up silver in Thursday's giant slalom, now has 11 World Championships medals in total.
