Strasbourg - 26 March 2019
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Philippe Lamberts, Belgian MEP and Brexit steering group member:
"Just imagine that the House of Commons decides that they want Norway or Norway plus. In order to do that you need the withdrawal agreement, that's the foundation of it. Actually the only case, well there's two cases, where you don't need the withdrawal agreement – it's no deal Brexit and a second referendum. Because then what you say is let the British people decide whether they like the withdrawal agreement or not. But at the moment that's the only thing we can do so. So don't expect the solution to come from this side of the (English) Channel, it won't. It will come from Westminster or it won't."
STORYLINE:
Belgian MEP and European Parliament Brexit steering group member Philippe Lamberts said the withdrawal agreement between the EU and UK Prime Minister Theresa May would still be the "foundation" of any divorce deal.
Lamberts said the "only two cases" when the agreement would not be needed were a so-called no-deal Brexit and if the UK held a second referendum.
The UK House of Commons voted late Monday to wrest the parliamentary timetable away from the government temporarily so that lawmakers can vote on alternatives to May's deal, which will be held on Wednesday.
