2. SOUNDBITE (English) Brady Corbet, director:
"The first 10 minutes of the film portrays a school shooting. The last 10 minutes of the film is a, is a concert and more or less real time. The juxtaposition of those two things for me really are a great example of what it means to be alive right now, especially, especially in my own country. They are massively conflicting sensations. And there's something about the juxtaposition, juxtaposition of those two things which I think is very interesting. At least, for me, it seems to be acknowledging strange truths about what it is to be alive right now."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Raffey Cassidy, actress – on playing two roles – young Celeste, and Celeste's daughter, Albertine – and shooting the movie in order:
"I kind of treated it like… Brady (Corbet, director)… That was the most helpful part because we did it as if it was one character. So, I did Celeste and then I completely forgot about her and moved on to Albertine, which was really helpful. And then we did the obvious things, like the accent and the appearance. But yeah, that was so much fun to see, kind of, the story through two different people's eyes."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Stacy Martin, actress - on Cassidy playing two roles and shooting the movie in order:
"It was quite a shock because we got really used to what we were doing and then suddenly she arrived as Albertine. And even though we'd spoken about the changes and we all knew what was going to happen, the reality of it was such a shock and it was quite nice as well because Eleanor, in a way, kind of… the relationship she has with Albertine is very close to the one she had with Celeste when they were younger. So, it's quite nice because I felt quite overprotective and I didn't want her to grow up and suddenly she was becoming this, this young woman. And it helped a lot in terms of that relationship."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Brady Corbet, director – on the demands placed on modern pop stars:
"To be on the road for eight months out of the year, it requires a level of professionalism. I mean, people are always getting dragged in the tabloids and stuff but it's quite unfair because, you know, of course people have moments of weakness where they need to let their hair down, especially when the, when the stakes are so high and you're expected to perform at, you know, an optimum level 200 nights a year. The thing is is that people don't make money on albums. They make money touring and you're valuable to… You're much more valuable to your representatives on the road than you are in the studio."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Brady Corbet, director:
"It's different than being a movie star. It's more, you know, when you're a movie star, I mean, not that I know too much about it, but it seems to me like if you, if you're the biggest movie star in the world, you still have an option of only working two to three months out of the year on one or two projects a year. And now some people work a lot more than that. But at least it's an option. When you're a pop star, you're on, you're on a, on a wheel that, that's very, very difficult to ever, you know, jump off of."
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Raffey Cassidy, actress
"With actors, like you say, we play characters and, you know, people never really get to see, you know, our actual character in real life. Whereas with pop stars, they're constantly out with their personality and I think that's why they get kind of judged so much and, you know, go through such a difficult time to be honest."

STORYLINE:
TERRORISM AND POPULAR CULTURE: BRADY CORBET, STACY MARTIN AND RAFFEY CASSIDY DISCUSS 'VOX LUX'
The dizzying heights and crushing lows of fame are explored in "Vox Lux" – director Brady Corbet's movie about a pop star's journey from obscurity to notoriety.
Natalie Portman stars as Celeste Montgomery: a beautiful, talented and tempestuous woman whose life in the spotlight is defined both by her celebrity, and two incidents of horrific violence.
After surviving a school shooting in 1999, young Celeste channels her anger and pain into music and soon attracts the attention of a passionate pop manager, played by Jude Law. With his help, Celeste is catapulted to fame, where she spends years as a beloved icon at the top of her game.
But another violent atrocity later in her career forces the star to deal with a wide-ranging media fallout and the mob mentality of a fickle public eager for a new celebrity scalp.
"The first 10 minutes of the film portrays a school shooting," says Brady. "The last 10 minutes of the film is a concert and more or less real time. The juxtaposition of those two things for me really are a great example of what it means to be alive right now, especially in my own country."
Corbet draws parallels between the fame of celebrity and the infamy of violent perpetrators, suggesting that the appetite for notoriety has common origins.
"The juxtaposition of those two things… I think is very interesting. At least, for me, it seems to be acknowledging strange truths about what it is to be alive right now."

Young Celeste is played by rising star Raffey Cassidy, who also stars as Celeste's daughter Albertine, later in the movie's timeframe.
Corbet shot the movie in chronological order, meaning Cassidy could immerse herself fully in each role.
"That was the most helpful part because we did it as if it was one character," says the 17-year-old British actress. "So, I did Celeste and then I completely forgot about her and moved on to Albertine, which was really helpful."
And having now played a pop star, Cassidy thinks the life of an actor is less demanding.
"People never really get to see our actual character in real life," she says. "Whereas with pop stars, they're constantly out with their personality and I think that's why they get kind of judged so much."
"Vox Lux" also stars Stacy Martin and is released in the U.K. on 3 May.
