++STARTS ON A SOUNDBITE++
1. SOUNDBITE: (English) John Kennedy, US Senator, (R) Louisiana:
"Michael Cohen lies like a dog. That's what he did. And I was worried about that. You know, I mean he sat there and said he'd never asked for a pardon and he had. And I don't mean any, any ill will or any disrespect, but you know, he has, I said it before, he has a checkered past. He has a very casual relationship with the truth. And I wouldn't take his check and you wouldn't take his check."

2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lindsey Graham, US Senator, (R) South Carolina:
"Maybe his lawyers didn't tell him they were going to inquire about a pardon. You couldn't blame him about that. But that'd be kind of odd to talk to your lawyer, your client about a pardon. I don't know. All I can say is Mr. Cohen's got a story to tell. He was a leaky ship to begin with. He couldn't take on much water and if he did try to get a job and then he denied trying to get a job. There was discussions about a pardon and he denied it but that just furthers the narrative that maybe he not the best conveyor or the truth. But quite frankly that's going to play itself out."

3.  SOUNDBITE: (English) Richard Blumenthal, US Senator, (D) Connecticut:
"Congress ought to hold accountable the lawyers who may have raised the issue of a pardon, hear again from Michael Cohen. This issue of prospective pardons as a lure or a potential reward for perjury is very deeply troubling and everyone involved in any of the reports ought to be brought before Congress and asked tough questions about the use of pardon. The president's potential misuse of his pardon authority, broad as it is, is one of the most deeply disturbing and damning revelations to come out of this inquiry so far."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Cohen, US President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer:
"I have fixed things. But I am no longer your fixer, Mr. Trump. I am going to prison and have shattered the safety and security that I tried so hard to provide for my family. My testimony certainly does not diminish the pain that I have caused my family and friends - nothing can do that. And I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from President Trump. And, by coming today, I have caused my family to be the target of personal, scurrilous attacks by the president."

STORYLINE:
Some US senators aren't surprised that Michael Cohen, US President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, may have lied again to Congress last week.
Cohen "directed his attorney" to explore a potential presidential pardon last year, his current attorney said Thursday, appearing to contradict his client's testimony to Congress.
"He was a leaky ship to begin with," said Republican Senator Linsey Graham, adding that the possibility he lied to Congress about whether he has requested a pardon "just furthers the narrative that maybe he not the best conveyor of the truth".
Cohen testified under oath last week at a House Oversight Committee hearing that he had never asked for, and would not accept, a pardon from Trump. The development was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The news raises questions about whether Cohen, who is slated to begin a three-year prison sentence in May, lied to Congress last week.
But it also highlights how the issue of pardons has emerged as a significant line of inquiry for congressional investigators.
