3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"We urge the US to fully recognize the high sensitivity and serious harm of the relevant issues, and abide by the One-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques between China and the US, especially the provisions of the August 17 Communique. We demand the US stops arms sales to Taiwan and US-Taiwan military exercises, and prudently and properly handles relevant Taiwan-related issues so as to avoid serious damage to China-US cooperation in important areas and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"The words and deeds of the relevant people in the United States are extremely absurd that grossly interfered in China's internal affairs. China is strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed to that and has already made solemn representations to the US. Based on the fabricated lies, the US has made unwarranted accusations and attacks against the Chinese government and China's Xinjiang policy. We will never accept this. We once again urge the US to respect the facts, abandon prejudice, watch its words and deeds, stop the malicious smearing and unwarranted accusations against China, stop interfering in China's internal affairs with the issue of Xinjiang."

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson
"The US bypassed the 1267 Committee and directly submitted relevant draft resolutions to the Security Council. This is not conducive to dialogue and consultation between the parties concerned. It also weakens the authority of the 1267 Committee as the main counter-terrorism agency of the Security Council. It is unhelpful to maintaining the unity of the Security Council, but will further complicate the issue. We urge the US to respect the will and efforts of the countries concerned, abide by the traditions of the Security Council, safeguard the authority of the 1267 Committee and the unity of the Security Council. We hope it can move with caution and avoid forcibly promoting the process."

9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson
"What I want to emphasise is that after July 1, 1997, Hong Kong affairs were purely China's internal affairs. The British side has no right to make irresponsible remarks and should not interfere with any excuses. We demand that the British side face up to the reality that it has been 22 years since Hong Kong's return, respect China's sovereignty, stop publishing relevant reports, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs."

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday urged the United States to halt arms sales to Taiwan and to end military exchanges between Washington and Taipei, after Taiwan said it wanted to purchase advanced new fighter jets and tanks from the US.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the US should "fully recognise the high sensitivity and serious harm" of the arm sales to Taiwan.
China also denounced criticism from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over China's treatment of its Uighur Muslims.
Geng described Pompeo's comments as "unwarranted" and "based on fabricated lies".
Washington "should watch its words and deeds," Geng added.
Geng said the US should not bypass the special committee of the UN Security Council to circulate a draft resolution seeking to put the head of a Pakistan-based militant group blamed by India for the 14 February suicide attack that killed 40 Indian soldiers in Kashmir on the UN sanctions blacklist.
In response to a UK report criticising China's allegedly anti-democratic behaviour in Hong Kong, Geng said the affairs of the former colony are purely China's internal ones and the UK should not interfere.
