4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Xu Wenjing, staff member, Beijing Wangfujing power substation, State Grid Corporation of China:
"Every day we patrol many times. The distance we cover in a day's patrol is equivalent to climbing up and down a 50-floor building. If we include the patrolling in the equipment zone, It's quite common for us to walk 15 or 16 kilometers a day. So every day when we return home, we are sort of exhausted."
5. Various of workers checking equipment in substation
6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Gao Lianjie, Secretary of party committee, maintenance branch, Beijing Electric Power Corporation:
"The ventilation of the underground power substation [is not good]. The whole working environment, including lacking of oxygen and the noise of equipment, is harsh. Yet they work here every day braving all these difficulties."

A team of women workers has worked against the difficulties to maintain a underground power substation in downtown area of Beijing, the capital of China.
Located in Wangfujing, one of the most famous shopping street in Beijing, this underground power substation has three floors with a depth of 20 meters.
Started in 1999, the substation has run safely for more than 7,000 days. What makes this substation special is that its maintenance is all done by women workers.
When the workers are on duty, they have to work in an enclosed environment for 24 hours. Usually they patrol the substation and check the equipment five times a day. Because the substation is underground, the workers have to climb up and down to check all the equipment.

Xu said climbing up and down is not the most difficult part. For her, the noise of the equipment is hard to bear. When summers comes, the substation is humid and stuffy. Their clothes are always soaked with sweat after the patrol.
