13. SOUNDBITE (French) Meriem Derkaoui, Mayor of Aubervilliers:
"Everyone says it: the Aubvervilliers area, the towns in the suburbs – I don't like the term 'neighbourhoods' because these are real towns – we are towns which are starved of equality. We want equality."
14. SOUNDBITE (French) Vincent Jeanbrun, Mayor of L'Hay-les-Roses:
"With our friends at the time, we wanted to take on the world – we believed in it and we believed we had a chance, we believed in social mobility, no matter where we came from. One has to note that today there is no more social mobility and no hope."
15. SOUNDBITE (French) Djamal Cherad, Director, local employment commission for Corbeil-Essonnes:
"We need to be more proactive in the inner cities, we need teams intervening in key areas, we need to go to people, we need to volunteer, we need to get out of the office. I am constantly saying: 'we need to reverse the trends on getting people into long-term employment', you need to change the software, young people have changed, the inner cities have changed, how can you help us to do that?"
16. SOUNDBITE (French) Omar Dawson, Grigny resident and volunteer with Grignywood NGO:
"Don't listen to those who talk about abandoned citizens and who use our poverty as a pretext to come and get money out of you. Please do not give them a single euro, because we know that we will never see a penny of it. People in the inner cities no longer subscribe to a policy which is more like 'Francafrique' than a real national policy, and are not concerned with these 'yellow vest' problems. Let's change this."
17. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"It was a policy which the government put it in place, which was accompanied whose philosophy was good and was a positive step – I will try to explain what it meant in practice – but we need to accept that in places where the social fabric was fragile it caused some suffering. So we mustn't turn away from that and we have to speed up compensation measures."

18. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"You have opened up a channel, I am ready for us to take a look at it, of free associative jobs (jobs open to people in economically depressed areas) - I believe a lot in this idea. It was tested before, but it was put under a lot of constraints, which is why it did not work. It does not work enough because people do not know enough about it, so we have to promote this open job system. It is now reserved for the commercial sector. I think that in the context of what must come out of the debate, among other things, is the idea to say that we must really boost third sector organisations, especially in the most difficult areas of the Republic, and well, to have a real plan of ambition for the small associations with free associative jobs, I think that it is a good idea."
++BLACK FRAMES++
19. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"We must also, ourselves, and that's where I commend what you said, it's a new way of looking at things and it goes with what you said and what you lived through on a daily basis: I cannot ban human stupidity, even by law. If you are in a public or private service and people, because you are black, say to you 'Do you know how to read?', it's called stupidity, I have no other words for it, and I cannot ban it, we have to fight against it."
++BLACK FRAMES++
20. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"You have to fight, you have to let others speak, you have to represent. You have to do what you did tonight - no pun intended, you crossed the street, since I saw you in front, you were on the balcony, and you came to say it: it's absurd! "

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron admitted on Monday that there are issues of inequality in the outskirts of major cities as weekly anti-government yellow vest protests continue across the nation.
Macron made the remarks during a meeting with local mayors and community activists in Evry-Courcouronnes.
High-rise suburbs and housing estates on the edge of major cities have experienced high levels of unemployment and discrimination over the past decade.
Macron will hold more meetings until March as part of his "great national debate", perceived as an attempt to quell the yellow vest demonstrations, which began in November in protest of a fuel tax.
