STORYLINE:
The head of Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission on Thursday said judicial authorities in the rich kingdom have held three court sessions over the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which he called an "unfortunate accident" but also a "heinous crime".
Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Aiban said simply that the case was "in the courts" in Saudi Arabia when asked to respond to calls that the kingdom open up for international support in investigating the killing that has drawn international outrage.
Al-Aiban was speaking as the 47-member Human Rights Council was considering a regular review of Saudi Arabia's human rights record - a periodic process faced by all UN member states.
China's review was set to be discussed on Friday, among 14 countries being considered in the current council session.
The Saudi envoy also said his country "refutes completely" calls for the investigation into the case to be internationalised, saying such demands all but cast doubt on the integrity and independence of the Saudi judicial system.
Britain and the advocacy group Human Rights Watch spoke out about shortcomings in Saudi Arabia's handling of the killing.
