The Chinese Consulate General in the New Zealand City of Christchurch on Friday launched a contingency plan shortly after mosque attacks took place there, and has been monitoring the situation to see if any Chinese citizens were among the casualties, the Chinese Consul-General said on Sunday in an exclusive interview with China Central Television (CCTV).
According to New Zealand media reports, the shooting attacks occurred in Christchurch at 13:46 Friday local time, about 40 minutes later, Consul-General Wang Zhijian received the news. Then the consulate general launched the contingency plan correspondingly.
Local media initially reported that nine people had been killed in the attacks at that time, which prompted the consulate general to attach great importance to the reports, and estimated that the situation was likely to worsen.
Wang said that in order to find out if Chinese citizens were among the casualties, the staff of the consulate general tried all means to ascertain the facts concerned.
"We have tried our best to find out more about the situation through multiple channels and in an all-round way. We have sought information from not only the local government, the police, the hospital and our friends overseas and we also attended the meeting with families of victims yesterday. Though the consulate general was not informed of any Chinese victims, we also sent staff members to the press briefing to make sure the information was accurate. We also verified the message at the scene," he said.
Wang also appreciated the positive actions of the local Chinese community and overseas Chinese toward this incident.
"After the incident, our overseas Chinese have performed very well. First of all, they condemned the incident through social network media immediately and expressed sympathy and solidarity to the victims' family members. They also took the risk to visit the nearby area of the incident with flowers," said Wang.
In addition, they started a fund-raising activity spontaneously, in which the Guangdong Chamber of Commerce has donated a sum of money so far.
At least 49 people were killed and 20 others were seriously injured in mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch Friday, in a carefully planned and unprecedented atrocity.
