நியூசிலாந்துக்கு சுற்றுப்பயணம் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள வங்கதேச அணி, மூன்று போட்டிகள் கொண்ட டெஸ்ட் தொடரில் பங்கேற்று விளையாடி வந்தது. மூன்றாவது போட்டி நாளை கிறிஸ்ட்சர்ச் மைதானத்தில் நடைபெறவிருந்தது. இந்நிலையில், நியூசிலாந்து கிறிஸ்ட்சர்ச் நகரில் உள்ள பள்ளிவாசலில், வங்கதேச கிரிக்கெட் வீரர்கள் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை தொழுகைக்கு சென்றிருந்தபோது துப்பாக்கிச்சூடு சம்பவம் நடந்துள்ளது. அதிலிருந்து நூலிழையில் வீரர்கள் உயிர் தப்பியுள்ளனர்.
பின்னர் பாதுகாப்பாக வங்கதேச வீரர்கள், ஹோட்டலில் தங்க வைக்கப்பட்டனர். உயிர்தப்பிய வங்கதேச வீரர்கள் மனதளவில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக வங்கதேச கிரிக்கெட் வாரியம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. இந்த தாக்குதல் சம்பவத்தில் பலரும்உயிரிழந்துள்ளதால், கிரிக்கெட் வீரர்களின் பாதுகாப்பு நலன் கருதி டெஸ்ட் போட்டியை ரத்து செய்வதாக இருநாட்டு கிரிக்கெட் வாரியங்களும் இணைந்து அறிவித்துள்ளது.
