കരസേനയുടെ ആദ്യ ഇന്ത്യൻ കമാൻഡർ-ഇൻ-ചീഫ് ആയ ഫീൽഡ് മാർഷൽ കോദണ്ഡേര എം കരിയപ്പയോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനാർഥമാണ് എല്ലാ വർഷവും ജനുവരി 15ന് സൈനിക ദിനം ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അവസാന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കമാൻഡർ-ഇൻ-ചീഫ് ആയിരുന്ന ജനറൽ സർ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ബുച്ചറിൽ നിന്ന് 1949 ജനുവരി 15നാണ് കോദണ്ഡേര എം കരിയപ്പ സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നത്.
