London [UK]: England pacer Jofra Archer was on Thursday ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2020 season due to stress fracture in his right elbow.
Archer was trying to get fit for the T20I series in South Africa starting next Tuesday after initial scans had not shown up any significant damage, however, the 24-year old was taken aback after further scans on the troublesome elbow on Wednesday confirmed the low grade stress fracture.
The seamer then headed back to Britain from South Africa earlier in a bid to regain full fitness after a sore right elbow saw him miss the final three Tests of England's 3-1 series win over the Proteas.
On its official website, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Archer, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, will also miss England's Test tour of Sri Lanka.
"Archer underwent further scans on his injured right elbow yesterday in the UK which confirmed a low grade stress fracture," the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.
The 24-year-old will now commence an injury rehabilitation programme with the ECB medical team with a view to be ready for the international summer campaign starting in June against the West Indies in a three-match Test series.
England are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka to play two-match Test series, commencing from March 19 and the Three Lions have named Lancashire’s Saqib Mahmood replacement of Archer, who last featured in the first Test against South Africa in December last year.
Meanwhile, Archer's injury will be a major setback for Rajasthan Royals, as the pacer was their one of the better performers and has been an indispensable part of the franchise since being signed up by them in 2018.
The Caribbean born-fast bowler finished his first year in IPL with 15 wickets and helped the inaugural winners of the IPL to make it to the playoffs. In the 2019 edition of the cash-rich league Archer had picked 11 wickets in as many matches and conceded only 6.76 runs per over.
Owing to his good and consistent performance, Archer was retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the upcoming season of IPL but the franchise will have to look for the replacements now.
