LEADIN:
Situated across a railway track, each day traders at Thailand's Talad Rom Hoop market shift their stalls out the way so approaching trains can pass through.
The market attracts millions of tourists from all over the world, eager to snap a photograph of the strange spectacle, which occurs seven times a day.
STORYLINE:
On the sound of a horn, this produce market, next to Thailand's Maeklong railway station in Samut Songhrkam province transforms.
Seven times a day, trains cross through small bustling market, laid out across about 100 metres of railway track.
While vendors scramble to move their produce out the way, tourists raise their cameras and smartphones to snap a photograph of the strange spectacle.
Vendors remove their low hanging awnings and umbrellas, after which the market is locally-known - "Talad Rom Hoop Market" or "Umbrella Pulldown" Market.
Once the trains pass, everything returns to normal.
On weekends, up to 2,000 thousand people can visit the market every day.
Many arrive on the railway itself, making the 37-kilometre journey from Bangkok, averaging just 30 kilometres per-hour the whole journey. Others visit as part of organised tours.
Lucas Caravalhio and his girlfriend are visiting the market from their native Brazil.
"Well, we know this market from the internet, and we got to view some blogs and some WhatsApp channels that told us about this place. So, we chose to get here and get to know for ourselves," he says.
The market's slightly odd tradition and colourful atmosphere make it a perfect destination for any "Insta-worthy" trip.
Its popularity has steadily increased since Thailand's tourism authority (TAT) launched its "Unseen Thailand" campaign in 2003.
It was an effort to manage any negative impact to the country's tourism from the deadly 2003 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic.
"Unseen Thailand" touted the Southeast Asian nation's unusual sights, offering special promotions to both international and domestic travellers.
Despite tourism numbers dropping by ten percent, over ten million people visited the country that year, according to TAT.
In 2018, a record 38 million tourists visited Thailand. At least two million of them visited Maeklong and its railway market.
Over 100 years since the railway was built, train passes nowadays are well-rehearsed operations.
The market existed before the railway tracks were built.
When Maeklong Rail Company built the line, at the turn of the 20th century, local sellers decided to continue staging their market as normal, just moving their produce out the way when trains approach.
It's now become a part of daily life.
"This is an activity that all shops here have been doing for at least 50 years, this is not complicated for us," says Noppadol Imemkosa, who runs one of the market's busiest restaurants.
"It is somehow beneficial for the market, as it has made it an attraction to tourists and more tourists are coming to see this reaction."
One of Noppadol Imemkosa's duties, along with other vendors, is to make sure all tourists are standing behind the red safety line as trains pass.
Further down the tracks, 60-year-old Mrs. Lek is touting mackerel fish. She rents her market stall for about two US dollars a day.
"I have seen the change in this market, because there are more tourists coming here now," she says.
"And sometimes Thai people complain that the market is too crowded with tourists, making it hard for Thai people to do their shopping. Sometimes Thai people will wait for when it's not busy to do their shopping."
Mrs. Lek hasn't benefited as much as Imemkosa from increased visitor numbers. Her customers are locals who prefer to stay away during the busy hours, she says.
"My income has reduced, but that's due to the economy, because the tourists visit, but they don't buy mackerel fish," she says.
"If I was selling ready-to-eat fruit, that would make a good income as tourists would buy it."
