ఈశాన్య రాష్ట్రం అసోంలో వరదలు బీభత్సం సృష్టిస్తున్నాయి. 17 జిల్లాల్లోని 8.69 లక్షలమందిపై ప్రభావం పడింది. నలుగురు మృతి చెందారు. అరుణాచల్ ప్రదేశ్, భూటాన్లో కురిసిన వర్షాలు అసోంలో వరద పెరగడానికి కారణమయ్యాయి.

అసోంలో వరద బీభత్సానికి నలుగురు బలయ్యారు. 17 జిల్లాల్లోని 8 లక్షల 69 వేల మందిపై ప్రభావం పడింది. 16 వేల హెక్టార్లలో పంటనష్టం జరిగింది.

విపత్తు నిర్వహణ దళం గణాంకాల ప్రకారం బార్పేట, దేమాజీ, లఖింపూర్, గోలాఘాట్, మజూలీ, నల్బరీ, నాగావ్, మోరీగావ్, చిరాంగ్, కోక్రాఝర్, జోర్హాట్, దిబ్రూగఢ్, బోన్గాయిగావ్, బక్సా, దర్రాంగ్, సోనిత్పూర్లలో నష్టం ఎక్కువగా సంభవించిందని తెలుస్తోంది.

అసోం రాష్ట్ర విపత్తు నిర్వహణ, జాతీయ విపత్తు నిర్వహణ దళాలు రంగంలోకి దిగాయి. లోతట్టు ప్రాంతాల్లో యుద్ధప్రాతిపదికన సహాయ చర్యలు చేపడుతున్నాయి.

అరుణాచల్ ప్రదేశ్, భూటాన్లో ఇటీవల కురిసిన వర్షాలు అసోంలో వరదలు పెరిగేందుకు కారణమయ్యాయి. బ్రహ్మపుత్ర, ఉపనదులు ప్రమాదకర స్థాయిని మించి ప్రవహిస్తున్నాయి.

అసోంలో మరికొన్ని రోజులు వర్షాలు కురిసే అవకాశం ఉందని వాతావరణ శాఖ ప్రకటించింది. పరిస్థితులు మరింత సంక్లిష్టంగా మారతాయని ప్రజలు ఆందోళన చెందుతున్నారు.

"Many say that this (beavers going extinct in Russia) was caused by the trade (beavers gland, skin and meat) during the Tsar times, and the trade in that time was indeed strong. But most likely it happened because of poaching. First the Imperial war, and then the civil war. These were the years of poaching. In these years many kinds of animals have been killed, including the beavers. Three lodges were found later in the 20th century when people started searching for the beavers that survived, each lodge having 30-40 families."

"This is a boy, number 6-10. Unfortunately we don't have names for them here, but numbers. 10 means the year he was born, so he's 9 years old."

"We have about 50 beavers here at the moment, and we don't really need more. The breeding facility has been through different times. But if you ask why, my answer is first of all would be because they are safe here. These animals aren't killed or tortured, either for skin or for meat. It's a scientific breeding facility, from here all the animals are then found homes across Russia (released into the wild)."

Beavers have made a remarkable recovery in Russia from near extinction a century ago to some 700, 000 wild animals across the country today.
That success is largely due to a breeding programme in southern Russia.
STORYLINE:
Meet the Eurasian beaver.
Hunted to nearly extinction in the early 20th century these aquatic mammals have found a safe haven in the village of Malaya Privalovka in the Voronezh region of Russia.
This breeding facility was founded in 1924 after the Soviet authorities introduced a ban on hunting beavers.
Since then scientists here have been working to save the animals from extinction.
"Most likely it (the threat) happened because of poaching. First the Imperial war, and then the civil war: these were the years of poaching." explains Vladimir Lavrov, Lead scientist at the facility.
"In these years many kinds of animals have been killed, including the beavers."
The work paid off and in 1934 first beavers were born in captivity.
Some of the animals are released into the wild in mating pairs. European (Eurasian) beavers mate for life, with a strong instinct for survival in the wild according to Lavrov.
There are almost 700 thousand wild beavers across Russia today and half of them came from this kennel according to Lavrov.
Next to the breeding centre is a public aquarium where visitors can see the mammals in a more naturalistic setting, swimming in water behind glass.
Visitors can also queue up to pet and pose with a beaver, under the close supervision of scientists.
The facility employs several dozen staff members, supplemented by volunteers who collect branches for the beavers to eat.
