భారతదేశంలో అత్యంత ఎత్తయిన మనిషిగా ప్రసిద్ధిగాంచిన ధర్మేంద్ర ప్రతాప్ సింగ్కు ఇటీవల తుంటి మార్పిడి శస్త్రచికిత్స విజయవంతంగా జరిగింది. గుజరాత్ అహ్మదాబాద్లోని ఓ ప్రైవేట్ ఆసుపత్రి ఆయనకు ఉచితంగా ఈ చికిత్స చేసింది.

ధర్మేంద్ర ప్రతాప్ సింగ్... ఉత్తర్ప్రదేశ్ ప్రతాప్గఢ్ వాసి. వయస్సు 43. ఎత్తు 8 అడుగుల ఒక అంగుళం. దేశంలోనే అత్యంత ఎత్తయిన వ్యక్తిగా గుర్తింపు పొందారాయన.

ధర్మేంద్రకు ఇటీవలే ఓ శస్త్రచికిత్స జరిగింది. గుజరాత్ అహ్మదాబాద్లోని ఓ ప్రైవేటు ఆస్పత్రి... ఆయనకు తుంటి మార్పిడి ఆపరేషన్ను ఆగస్టు 26న విజయవంతంగా చేసింది. ఆయన ఇప్పటికి దాదాపు పూర్తిగా కోలుకున్నారు.

కొంతకాలం క్రితం జరిగిన ఓ ప్రమాదంలో ధర్మేంద్ర తుంటి దెబ్బతింది. తర్వాత ఆయన తీవ్రమైన నడుము నొప్పితో బాధపడ్డారు. చికిత్స చేయలేమని లఖ్నవూలోని వైద్యులు చేతులెత్తేశారు. ఫలితంగా ధర్మేంద్ర అహ్మదాబాద్ చేరుకున్నారు. ఆయన ఆర్థిక పరిస్థితి దృష్ట్యా ఉచితంగా వైద్యం చేసింది కేడీ ఆస్పత్రి.

తుంటి మార్పిడి శస్త్రచికిత్సలో నడుము భాగంలో అసెటేబులార్ కప్పులు అమర్చాల్సి ఉంటుంది. ప్రస్తుతం మార్కెట్లో అందుబాటులో ఉన్నవి... ధర్మేంద్రకు సరిపోలేదు. అందుకే చెన్నై నుంచి ప్రత్యేకంగా తెప్పించారు వైద్యులు.

"శస్త్రచికిత్స చేయటానికి 2-3 గంటలు పట్టింది. నడుము భాగంలోని కప్పు సైజ్ పెద్దగా ఉండటం వల్ల అత్యంత జాగ్రత్తగా ఈ శస్త్రచికిత్స చేయాల్సి వచ్చింది. తుంటి మార్పిడి సాధారణ వ్యక్తికి జరిగితే సాయంత్రానికల్లా వారు నడవగలరు. కానీ ధర్మేంద్ర నడవటానికి 3 వారాలు పట్టింది."

తుంటి మార్పిడి శస్త్రచికిత్సలో నడుము భాగంలో అసెటేబులార్ కప్పులు అమర్చాల్సి ఉంటుంది. ప్రస్తుతం మార్కెట్లో అందుబాటులో ఉన్నవి... ధర్మేంద్రకు సరిపోలేదు. అందుకే చెన్నై నుంచి ప్రత్యేకంగా తెప్పించారు వైద్యులు.

"So I think there is a responsibility on everybody to dial back their rhetoric. We've had from some of the Leavers, language around 'surrender' and 'traitor' and 'betrayal' but also from some of the Remainers language around 'fascists' and 'coup' and 'dictator'. And I think we all have a responsibility to step back from that overheated rhetoric because if not it does create an environment where violence is more likely."
(Reporter asking off-camera: "What do you think the impact of this could be?")
"I think the danger with this rhetoric is that it creates an environment where crazy people are more likely to do crazy things. I think my family is an embodiment of what can happen in the worst case scenario. But I think more broadly it also poisons our politics. We're at a stage now where we're increasingly polarised as a country and I think we all have a responsibility to try to remember that no matter whether you're a Leaver or a Remainer you probably are doing this and you probably are arguing for the thing that you think is in the best interest in the country. And it's incumbent upon all of us now to remember that of course we disagree passionately on lots of things but our common humanity is more important than that. Jo (Cox) talked a lot about her belief that we had more in common than things that divide us and I think at a moment like this when our country feels very fraught it's even more important to remember that."

"I have to say when I heard the comments yesterday I was genuinely shocked by them. I didn't think our politics would descend to this. I didn't think that people would use Jo's name in that way. But this morning, in thinking about how to respond to all of this, I also thought about how Jo would respond, and I think she would have tried to assume the best motives and the best intentions and it was a bear pit in the House of Commons last night and I think the prime minister probably didn't mean to use the words that he did in the way that he did. And so I just hope now today that all of us can just start to take responsibility for dialling back on that rhetoric and starting to think about the things that we, we do have in common."
STORYLINE:
The widower of murdered legislator, Jo Cox, says he was "genuinely shocked" by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's use of confrontational language in Parliament the day after suffering a broad defeat in the Supreme Court.
Johnson was facing backlash after he characterised an opposition bill mandating a Brexit extension as a "surrender bill," and brushed off concerns that his language might endanger legislators as "humbug."
Some in Parliament warned Johnson to be more cautious given the 2016 killing of Jo Cox.
The Labour member of parliament was murdered a week before Britain's European Union membership referendum by a far-right attacker shouting "death to traitors."
"I have to say when I heard the comments yesterday I was genuinely shocked by them. I didn't think our politics would descend to this. I didn't think that people would use Jo's name in that way," her widower Brendan Cox said on Wednesday.
He added that it there was a responsibility on everybody to dial back their rhetoric to avoid fostering an environment where violence was more likely.
"It's incumbent upon all of us now to remember that of course we disagree passionately on lots of things but our common humanity is more important than that. Jo talked a lot about her belief that we had more in common than things that divide us and I think at a moment like this when our country feels very fraught it's even more important to remember that."
Tempers have been inflamed in Parliament as the October 31 Brexit deadline gets closer.
