A power plant, built and operated by Chinese company, has provided stable power supply to war-torn Iraq and created a large number of job opportunities, making it one of the most successful projects in the country’s post-war reconstruction.
Located in Wasit, the power plant was built and operated by China's Shanghai Electricity Group Co. Ltd. The construction started in 2010 and was finished four years later ahead of the construction deadline despite of material and investment shortages.
Such speed is rare in Iraq. When Iraq decided to expand the power plant, the expanded project was delivered 11 months earlier than the finish date.
Since the power plant has been put into use, it has generated at least 15 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, accounting for one fourth of Iraq’s annual power consumption.
"It is very important for the Iraqi power grid to finish the project in such a short time and with high efficiency, because the electricity demand in summer is quite huge," said Ali Ahmed, head engineer of Wasit Power Station.
When the first-phase of the project was delivered, Iraq was not safe for workers due to rampant terrorists attacks. However, the Chinese company still cooperated with Iraq, as the entire project would suffer a great loss if it was halted.
"We fully prepared for all kinds of emergencies, and we stayed here and continued to finish this project. Six units of facilities were handed over ahead of the time set in the contract," said He Zhuang, the power plant’s Chinese director.
The Chinese worker's hard work and determination won good reputation and trust in Iraq.
The Chinese company also trained locals, empowering them with a usable skills. The locals are happy and thankful that their lives have been improved thanks to the power plant.
"The second-stage project is operated by locals. Work on civil projects, machinery and power have been handed over to the Iraqi people. Thus, the power plant has created an internal economy," said Ahmed.
