TARON EGERTON SPEAKS OF PREPARATION FOR HIS GAY LOVE SCENE
On the "Rocketman" carpet, Taron Egerton doesn't differentiate when it comes to on-screen intimacy, because he thinks it's always an uncomfortable experience for actors.
Egerton, who stars as Elton John in the fantasy biopic, spoke briefly about his love scene with Richard Madden before going into the screening for the film's U.S. premiere Wednesday (29MAY2019) in New York.
He says his preparation was simple.
"I just formed a great friendship with a great actor, and we both knew it was going to be weird, because that's the nature of intimacy on screen, regardless of the genders involved. And we got along and did our job and made a scene that we think is quite beautiful," Egerton said.
"Rocketman" chronicles Elton's rise to superstardom as well as his struggles with depression, substance abuse, and acceptance of his homosexuality.
There's a scene in the film, where Elton comes out to his mother (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) and after telling him she always knew it, then tells him that's why he will never be loved.
While harsh, Egerton says as an actor, "You don't really judge too much the nature of the story, and the nature of what happens to a character, because you want to try to remain as impartial and non-judgmental as possible."
But on an objective level, Egerton just can't grasp that sort of rejection from your family.
"It's not something I can relate to, because I had such a solid upbringing with great family and great friends. I can only imagine the damage caused by not having that," Egerton said.
David Furnish said he understands the family reaction, because he had a similar experience with his mother, and blames the problem on precedent, or lack thereof.
"I had a similar conversation with my mother, and my mother, who loved me dearly. There were no role models. There was nobody you could point to, or anybody you could turn to and say, 'Well, look at Elton John and David Furnish,' they have a happy life. They've been married for a long time. They have children. They have no one," Furnish said.
He added: "Homosexuality was criminalized in Britain, up until around the point where Elton came out to his mother. So, there were no options for the traditional trappings of life that straight people were used to having. So, it was very – I could understand where that response would come from because my mother loved me dearly, and supported me all my life, said I'm scared for you, and I fear for you."
While Elton's parents were not supportive, his writing partner, Bernie Taupin has always been there for him.
Taupin calls the idea of seeing himself on screen "surreal," but then he walks back the adjective.
"That's been that's been my most used adjective. And I don't want to be like Donald Trump and overuse and adjective, so. But quite honestly, yes, it is. It's pretty surreal," Taupin said.
Taupin says he's surprised by his unusual journey.
"I'm thrilled by the way I've been portrayed by a brilliant young actor like Jamie Belle. So, I'm just enjoying the ride, man," Taupin said.
Richard Madden plays his manger and lover, and by the end of the film takes a dark turn.
"That's what good about him. Because villains rarely know they are villains. So, we got to start from a story, a love story between Elton and John. And then it turns and twists into something much more difficult. And that's the fun of playing him with Taron. We start off in the good place, and we end up somewhere very different," Madden said.
The actor is best known for playing Robb Stark in "Game of Thrones." The series ended last week, but Stark met his demise in the third season at the infamous red wedding.
So how does he feel about the end of it all?
"Not in the rearview mirror so much as just a part of me. I always forget I was in 'Game of Thrones,' because it's been so long since I was in it, but it was great part of my life, and I'm thrilled the show is going so well," Madden said.
Madden did not wish to comment on his co-star Kit Harrington going into rehab.
"Rocketman" opens in theaters on Friday.
