The director of BishopAccountability.org, a website tracking information on clergy accused of sexual abuse, said Tuesday that the Catholic church was "nowhere close to enacting the reforms it must make to stop this epidemic."
Ann Barrett Doyle was speaking alongside abuse survivor Phil Saviano at a news conference in Rome ahead of a four-day summit being hosted by Pope Francis on clergy sexual abuse.
The high-stakes meeting is designed to impress on Catholic bishops around the world that the problem is global and that there are consequences if they cover it up.
The meeting opening on Thursday comes at a critical time for the church and Francis' papacy, following the explosion of the scandal in Chile last year and renewed outrage in the United States over decades of cover-up that were exposed by a Pennsylvania grand jury report.
