ARIANA GRANDE WINS IHEART RADIO ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Pharrell Williams gave a big nod to Ariana Grande who won Artist of the Year at the iHeartRadio Awards Thursday (14 March 2019) in Los Angeles.
Grande pre-taped an acceptance speech and performance of her single "Needy" which was played after Williams said that he was proud of her for overcoming "what would be the most craziest and broken time of her life."
A highlight of the live broadcast which aired on FOX was a medley by the Backstreet Boys. They performed their latest single "No Place" and their old hit "I Want It That Way"
John Legend performed "Preach" backed up by a choir.
Alicia Keys who won the Innovator Award invited her young son Egypt up on stage to perform "Raise A Man" with her.
Chris Pratt joined winner of the Artist of the Decade, Garth Brooks, on stage.
Halsey gave an emotional acceptance speech for her L'Oreal Paris FanGirls Award after being introduced by Elle Fanning. Fanning praised Halsey for using her platform "as a megaphone to speak up and speak out for those that may be afraid to."
Halsey took to the stage and said that the word fangirl "has been used for a very long time in a very derogatory sense." She said, "I think if a young woman likes something then in the eyes of the rest of the world that makes it stupid or it makes it unimportant." She went on to say that she knows that being a fangirl is "very much the opposite."
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler battled to open the envelope for what seemed like eternity when he presented the award for Song of the Year to "The Middle" by Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey. The artists' acceptance speech was cut off as the live broadcast came to an abrupt end while Morris was just starting to speak.
