"(US) President (Donald) Trump has been resolutely working toward North Korea's nuclear abolishment and the Japanese government highly regards his leadership. With Japan and US cooperation, we would like to do everything to resolve problems of nuclear missiles and abduction issues, which is most important to Japan. Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize award, the Nobel committee has a policy not to release who was recommended or not for 50 years. Based on that, we will refrain from making any comment on this."

STORYLINE:
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his chief spokesman have declined to say if Abe nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Abe noted while speaking in Parliament on Monday that the Nobel committee does not disclose the parties behind nominations and has done so for the past 50 years.
The government's top spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, told reporters that Japan highly valued Trump's efforts on North Korea's nuclear disarmament, but he echoed Abe in refusing a further comment.
Trump boasted on Friday that Abe had nominated him, sending him a "beautiful copy" of a letter sent to the committee. That claim could not be immediately verified.
The Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported on Sunday, citing unnamed government sources, that Abe nominated Trump following an informal request by the White House.
