Melbourne - 6 February 2019
1. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at news conference
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister:
"I've written two letters now to the Thai prime minister and our consular officials and others have been using every opportunity they have to press the case to bring Hakeem (al-Araibi, a Bahraini footballer playing for club in Australia who was detained in Thailand) home. We've also been pressing that case with the governor of Bahrain as well. And I'd simply say this, it is within the executive authority of the Thai government to actually enable him under their law to be returned to Australia. I have pointed this out in the engagements I've had with the Thai prime minister."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister:
"What I've also stressed is that the Australian people and the Thai people have a wonderful people-to-people relationship and I've stressed just how strongly Australians feel about this. And I would be very disappointed if, as a result of how this matter is handled, that that relationship between the Thai and Australian people were affected. I would be very disappointed about that. So I've appealed to the prime minister to take that into account. They do have the authority to use those executive controls for him to come home. And so, we're going to continue to work patiently and respectfully to secure that outcome."

STORYLINE:
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he's written two letters to his Thai counterpart calling for the release of a football player who is fighting extradition to Bahrain.
Hakeem al-Araibi, a refugee who lives and plays for a semi-professional club in Australia, has been held in Thailand since November at the request of Bahrain.
The 25-year-old al-Araibi, a former Bahraini national team player, has said he fled his home country due to political repression and fears he is at risk of being tortured if he returns to Bahrain.
"It is within the executive authority of the Thai government to actually enable him, under their law, to be returned to Australia. I have pointed this out in the engagements I've had with the Thai prime minister," Morrison said on Wednesday.
Morrison's comments come after Australia's football body, Football Federation Australia, cancelled a warm up match in Thailand, ahead of next month's qualifiers for the Asian under-23 championships, in protest of al-Araibi's detention.
