STORYLINE:
CHRISTIAN BALE, REGINA KING GET POLITICAL AT TAME GOLDEN GLOBES
The Golden Globe Awards looked like it had gone entirely back to frothy, bubbly business as usual on Sunday (6 JANUARY), until Regina King did the impossible: She got the orchestra to stop playing her off.
King used her platform on stage accepting the supporting actress award for "If Beale Street Could Talk," to shed a light on Time's Up x 2, the second-year iteration of the legal defense fund founded in the wake of the sexual misconduct revelations that shook Hollywood.
"I am going to use my platform right now to say in the next two years ... to make sure that everything that I produce that is 50 percent women," King said.
Christian Bale won the award for best comedy film actor for his role in "Vice." It's the second award for the actor, who played former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney.
After accepting the award, Bale thanked his wife early in his speech then Satan for providing inspiration on how to play Cheney before suggesting he might take on another unlikeable character, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The film about Cheney delves into his family's backstory and how he became one of the most powerful and influential people in the country.
But this is not last year, and could be a sign that awards shows in general are going to return to business as usual.
Harrison Ford presented the directing award and did not, as Natalie Portman did one year prior, note that all the nominees were men.
Jessica Chastain, who is often quite vocal on social media, stuck to the script presenting the best actress award.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association followed up on its promise from last year to protect journalists.
HFPA president Meher Tatna announced $2 million in grants to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
