സലിം ദുരാനി: അഫ്‌ഗാനില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയിലെത്തി ഹൃദയം കൊണ്ട് ക്രിക്കറ്റ് കളിച്ച 'പീപ്പിള്‍സ് മാന്‍'

ഗാലറിയെ ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രകടനം നടത്തിയ സലിം ദുരാനി ആരാധകരുമായി എന്നും അടുപ്പം പുലര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നു. കാണികള്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുമ്പോഴൊക്കെയും താരത്തിന്‍റെ ബാറ്റില്‍ നിന്നും സിക്‌സറുകള്‍ പറന്നു. 'ദുരാനി ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ടെസ്റ്റ് വേണ്ട' എന്ന മുദ്രാവാക്യം ഒരു കാലത്ത് ഇന്ത്യൻ ക്രിക്കറ്റില്‍ പ്രശസ്‌തമായിരുന്നു.

അഹമ്മദാബാദ്: ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഇതിഹാസ ക്രിക്കറ്റര്‍ സലിം ദുരാനി (88) അന്തരിച്ചു. ഗുജറാത്തിലെ ജാംനഗറിലെ വീട്ടിലായിരുന്നു അന്ത്യം. ദീര്‍ഘനാളായി അസുഖബാധിതനായിരുന്നു. 1934 ഡിസംബർ 11ന് അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാനിലെ കാബൂളിലായിരുന്നു സലിം ദുരാനിയുടെ ജനനം.

ആഭ്യന്തര ക്രിക്കറ്റിൽ ഗുജറാത്ത്, മഹാരാഷ്‌ട്ര ടീമുകളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇടങ്കയ്യന്‍ ബാറ്ററും ഇടങ്കയ്യന്‍ സ്പിന്നറുമായ ദുരാനി 1960-നും 1973-നും ഇടയിലാണ് ഇന്ത്യയ്‌ക്കായി കളിച്ചത്. 29 ടെസ്റ്റുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് 1202 റണ്‍സും 75 വിക്കറ്റുകളുമാണ് ദുരാനി നേടിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.

ഒരു സെഞ്ചുറിയും മൂന്ന് അഞ്ച് വിക്കറ്റ് നേട്ടങ്ങളും ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയാണ് താരത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രകടനം. 1960ല്‍ അന്താരാഷ്‌ട്ര അരങ്ങേറ്റം നടത്തിയ മുംബൈയിലെ ബ്രാബോണ്‍ സ്‌റ്റേഡിയത്തില്‍ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു താരം തന്‍റെ അന്താരാഷ്‌ട്ര കരിയറിന് വിരമാമിട്ടത്. ക്രിക്കറ്റ് രംഗത്ത് നിന്നും അര്‍ജുന അവാര്‍ഡ് നേടുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ക്രിക്കറ്റര്‍ കൂടിയാണ് ദുരാനി. ഇന്ത്യയ്‌ക്കായി ടെസ്റ്റ് കളിച്ച അഫ്‌ഗാനില്‍ ജനിച്ച ഒരേയൊരു താരം കൂടിയാണ് ദുരാനി.

'പീപ്പിള്‍സ് മാന്‍': ഇന്ത്യൻ ക്രിക്കറ്റിന്‍റെ നവോത്ഥാന നാളുകളിലെ പ്രധാനിയാണ് ദുരാനി. ഗാലറിയെ ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രകടനമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റേത്. വേദികളില്‍ തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞ കാണികള്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുമ്പോഴെല്ലാം ദുരാനിയുടെ ബാറ്റില്‍ നിന്നും സിക്‌സറുകള്‍ പറന്നിരുന്നു.

ദുരാനി സ്‌ട്രൈക്ക് ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ കാണികള്‍ സിക്‌സറിനായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടാല്‍ അടുത്ത പന്ത് ഒന്നുകിൽ ലോങ്‌ ഓണിലേക്കൊ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഡീപ് മിഡ് വിക്കറ്റിലേക്കോ ഉയരുമെന്നായിരുന്നു അന്നത്തെ ചൊല്ല്. ഇക്കാരണത്താല്‍ തന്നെയാണ് എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും സലിം ദുരാനി തന്റെ ആത്മകഥ എഴുതിയാൽ, 'ആസ്‌ക് ഫോർ എ സിക്‌സ്' എന്നായിരിക്കും ഉചിതമായ തലക്കെട്ടെന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മുന്‍ നായകന്‍ സുനില്‍ ഗവാസ്‌കര്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ എഴുതിയത്.

1961-62ല്‍ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിനെതിരായ ടെസ്റ്റ് പരമ്പര ഇന്ത്യയ്‌ക്ക് നേടിത്തരുന്നതില്‍ നിര്‍ണായക പങ്കാണ് ദുരാനി വഹിച്ചത്. ചെന്നൈയിലും കൊല്‍ക്കത്തയിലും നടന്ന മത്സരങ്ങളില്‍ യഥാക്രമം എട്ടും പത്തും വിക്കറ്റുകള്‍ വീഴ്‌ത്തിയ താരത്തിന്‍റെ മിവവിലായിരുന്നു അന്ന് ഇന്ത്യ അഞ്ച് മത്സര പരമ്പരയില്‍ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിനെ 2-0ത്തിന് തോല്‍പ്പിച്ചത്. 1967 മുതല്‍ 1970 വരെയുള്ള നാല് വര്‍ഷം കളിക്കാതിരുന്ന ഇടങ്കയ്യന്‍ ഓള്‍ റൗണ്ടര്‍ പിന്നീട് 1971ലെ വെസ്റ്റ് ഇന്‍ഡീസ് പര്യടനത്തിലൂടെയാണ് ടീമിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തിയത്.

അന്ന് കരീബിയന്‍ മണ്ണില്‍ ഇന്ത്യ തങ്ങളുടെ ആദ്യ പരമ്പര നേടി മടങ്ങുമ്പോളും ദുരാനിയുടെ പ്രകടനം നിര്‍ണായകമായി. പോർട്ട് ഓഫ് സ്‌പെയിനിലെ ആദ്യ ടെസ്റ്റില്‍ തന്‍റെ ഒറ്റ സ്‌പെല്ലിൽ ക്ലൈവ് ലോയിഡിനെയും സർ ഗാരിഫീൽഡ് സോബേഴ്‌സിനെയും ദുരാനിയ്‌ക്ക് പുറത്താക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയ്‌ക്ക് ആ മത്സരം വിജയിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നോ എന്ന കാര്യം സംശയമാണ്.

ഒടുവില്‍ 1973ലെ കാണ്‍പൂര്‍ ടെസ്റ്റിനുള്ള ടീമില്‍ നിന്ന് ദുരാനി പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ടപ്പോഴുണ്ടായ ആരാധക രോഷം ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ലോകം പെട്ടെന്ന് മറക്കാന്‍ സാധ്യതയില്ല. 'ദുരാനി ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ടെസ്റ്റ് വേണ്ട' എന്ന മുദ്രാവാക്യമായിരുന്നു അന്ന് ആരാധകര്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന് കേട്ടത്. ദുരാനിക്ക് ആരാധകരുമായുള്ള അടുപ്പത്തിന്‍റെ ആഴമായിരുന്നു ഈ മുദ്രാവാക്യം ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ലോകത്തിന് മുന്നില്‍ കാട്ടിത്തന്നത്.

1969-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ 'ഏക് മസൂം' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം ബോളിവുഡിലും അരങ്ങേറ്റം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. സലിം ദുരാനിയുടെ വിയോഗത്തിൽ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി നരേന്ദ്ര മോദി അനുശോചനം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദുരാനി ഒരു ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ഇതിഹാസമായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ട്വീറ്റ് ചെയ്‌തു.

ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ലോകത്തെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഉയർച്ചയിലെ ദുരാനിയുടെ സംഭാവനകള്‍ നിര്‍ണായകമാണ്. താരത്തിന്‍റെ ശൈലി കളിക്കളത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തും പേരുകേട്ടയാളായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ വിയോഗത്തിൽ വേദനിക്കുന്നതായും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ട്വീറ്റ് ചെയ്‌തു. കോൺഗ്രസ് നേതാവും എംപിയുമായ ശശി തരൂർ, സിപിഎം ജനറല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറി സിതാറാം യെച്ചൂരി, ഇന്ത്യൻ ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ടീം മുൻ പരിശീലകനും താരവുമായിരുന്ന രവി ശാസ്ത്രി എന്നിവരടക്കമുള്ള പ്രമുഖർ സലിം ദുരാനിയെ അനുസ്‌മരിച്ച് ട്വീറ്റ് ചെയ്‌തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
