Maddening speed, heavy duty bikes, long rides, friendship and empowerment; all these are synonymous with The Bikerni, an All-Female Motorcycle Association of India with a pan-India presence and craze. The Bikerni group comprises of women riders who are passionate about driving heavy duty bikes and enthusiastic to take part in solo and group races. The members of this association are breaking stereotypes about women bikers and pacing ahead with various chapters and awareness campaigns through their rides.
We tend to turn around and take a second glance at anybody who zooms past on a stylish bike. That is why youngsters, specially men, take a liking for bike rides. There are many men bikers' associations all over the world. But the Bikerni is an exclusive female biker association with a difference. It was formed in 2011 by Urvashi Patole and Firdaus Shaikh in Pune. Like the word biker implies a male rider, bikerni means a female rider. We will be in for a shock if we assume that these women ride scooters or Activa. The Bikernis ride heavy duty bikes like Yamaha, Royal Enfield, Harley Davidson, UM Renegade Commando, Indian Springfield, Ducati XDiavel, Street Glide, Suzuki Intruder and Trump. They are capable of riding hundreds of kilometers on these bikes. The group now boasts of 3,000 members nationwide. Besides conducting rides, the group also organizes events like India Bike Week and Rider Mania.
The association was formed with the intent of encouraging women riders and providing necessary assistance to those who wish to take on adventure tours. The group has members across major Indian cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Mumbai. On May 6th every year, the group conducts various sessions on the occasion of International Female Ride Day. The Bikerni group also makes its voice heard about women’s issues. Within 2 years of its formation, the group won the Limca Book of World Records and Motor Cycle Group of the Year Award. The members even successfully finished the toughest Khardung-La Pass ride. Though Hyderabad had its share of female bikers, there was no official group. Jai Bharati, a techie from Hyderabad organized women bikers in the city and started The Bikerni Hyderabad chapter in 2013. Anybody with a driving license and passion for bike riding can enroll in this group. Jai Bharati has the experience of organizing both short distance and long duration rides.
The members of Bikerni group are experts in their own fields like software, banking, business, fashion and dance. Their shared passion for bike riding got united them. One of the major events conducted by the Hyderabad Bikerni chapter was the cross-country ride. Led by Jai Bharati, the bikernis traveled across India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. At a time when people can’t endure even 100km rides, the bikernis have seamlessly zoomed past on their bikes for thousands of kilometers. In their cross-country ride, the bikernis rode 17,000km for 55 days. The members of Bikerni Hyderabad group Jai Bharati, Smriti and Anita have completed their 28-days Kashmir to Kanyakumari bike ride. During their rides, the members create awareness about contemporary issues that the women are facing in the society.
The bikernis take several safety measures before going on a ride. They wear helmet, gloves, shoes and jacket without fail. They carry their driving license and bike related documents at all times. They thoroughly check their bikes for any minor repairs that might arise during the course of their rides. The members communicate in sign language with each other on the road. When undertaking long journeys, they will be on constant vigil and book accommodation in advance to prevent any safety failures. Despite taking so many precautions, dangers are sometimes inevitable. But the group will not be held responsible as the members sign a NOC before starting the ride. The Hyderabad bikernis are proving that riding is not all about fun by making their voice heard about Telangana tourism, women safety and conserving handlooms. Though their riding started off as a hobby, they are using it as a tool to create social awareness.
