Malaysia is poised to benefit from China's efforts of opening its economy to the world, said Malaysia's Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Wednesday in Shanghai during the second China International Import Expo(CIIE) that opened on Tuesday.
Ong Kian Ming talked with China Global Television Network(CGTN) after listening to Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of CIIE, and said he was quite impressed by Xi's remarks on China's innovation efforts.
"I think what really captured me yesterday during President Xi's speech was opening up together with innovation. I think this is one area where we really look to China to lead, in many areas of artificial intelligence and industry 4.0, and because of this leadership, we will be able to benefit in Malaysia from a technology investment standpoint. And this is the kind of areas of cooperation that we want to enhance even further," he said.
Many will be forgiven to believe that China's main imports from Malaysia are bird nets or fruits. However, according to Ong, electrical and electronic products are the main items, accounting for 40 percent of the total import.
"I think we have a couple of interesting products and services that we can bring into China, especially in the electrical and electronic sector where we already have a lot of presence in a place like Penang whereby we want to attract more Chinese investors to come to Malaysia and also be able to export back to China," said Ong.
Apart from the more established products, Malaysia also wants to increase cooperation in other sectors such as "services for example, where we want to try to continue to attract Chinese students to come to Malaysia to study."
He also said that an increase in bilateral ties between the two countries will greatly benefit Malaysia
especially in areas like artificial intelligence, big data and industry 4.0 type activities, where China is particularly strong and a leader in the world.
Ong added that as a country, Malaysia is in support of an open and fair trading system. He also praised China's import expo saying it provides great opportunities for many companies and countries and sends a signal to the world of China's support for free trade.
"I think this is a strong signal that China does not want to go down the protectionist track. And for open trading countries such as Malaysia and other countries in Southeast Asia including Singapore,Thailand and Vietnam, we want to be able to partner with China, to send a signal to the global community that we still want a strong multilateral trading system," he said.
