SHOTLIST:
ASSOCIATED PRESS - AP CLIENTS ONLY
Addis Ababa - 23 March 2019
1. Wide of two Ethiopian Airlines jets preparing for take-off at Bole international Airport
2. Wide of a now-grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 jet by hangar
3. Various of a grounded Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 jet in Maintenance and Repair Overhaul hangar
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines:
"Right after the Lion Air accident, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) came up with Emergency Airworthiness Directive, which is a common communication platform. So we have taken that. The Boeing also came with a bulletin, similar content. So we took the content, we analysed it, and we incorporated it in our training manuals and in our working manuals, operational manuals. And we have briefed all pilots. And we have also put it in a checklist so that they update themselves every time they go on a flight. So all our pilots are aware of that. And they exercised (it) whenever it is required. But from (since) the accident, today we believe that might not have been enough. That is not enough."
5. Wide of an Boeing 737 Max 8 jet by hangar
6. Various of one of the Angle of Attack (AOA) sensors covered with protector
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines:
"In terms of assuring ourselves, of training our pilots with the latest technology simulator, we have bought the MAX simulator. In fact, we ordered (it) almost at a similar time when we ordered the airplanes. We bought it from CAE, a Canadian simulator manufacturing company. And it has been reconfigured since January of 2019 this year. And now it is fully operating. And yes our pilots are taking simulator training on both the NG and the MAX interchangeably."
8. Wide of a Boeing 737 Max 8 jet by hangar
9. Nose of an airplane with cargo truck passing in background
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines:
"As you know, the pilots take training - simulator training - every six months. So by the time they take their training, their recurrent (refresher) training, the MAX (simulator) was not there. But, in any case, it wouldn't have made any difference because the problem that we are discussing about, this MCAS  (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) problem, is not configured on the NG (Boeing 737 Next Generation) simulator and on the MAX simulator. So both simulators cannot simulate this problem at this time."
11. Various of Bole International Airport and the now-grounded Max 8 jets
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines:
"We were very impressed with this airplane. Of course it's also slightly bigger than the NG. It takes like, in our configuration, six more passengers. So we were impressed, we liked it. And we had no reason to doubt (it) until the Lion Air crash happened, unfortunately, and of course our own tragic accident. So there was no comment from pilots otherwise or we had no reason to doubt this airplane. It was a very good airplane."
13. Various of airport
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Captain Yohannes Hailemariam, Vice President of Flight Operations at Ethiopian Airlines:
"We hear that Boeing is going to make some software changes and display changes as well as to make the Angle of Attack a basic system. Other than that, the pilots have done what they have to do, I believe, they'd have done t   he same thing. But as much as I believe, this is my own opinion; we will see from the outcome of the investigation, the problem is more than MCAS. And MCAS is not a problem that is going to be overcome by an average pilot."
15. Various of Ethiopian Airlines training facility
16. Interior of simulator as it simulates an emergency scenario
17. Various of emergency simulation in which passengers exit aircraft through slide
STORYLINE:
The warning and training requirements set for the now-grounded 737 Max 8 aircraft may not have been enough following the Ethiopian plane crash that killed 157 people, the chief of Ethiopian Airlines said Saturday.
After the Lion Air crash off Indonesia in October, the US Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing "came up with contents that we incorporated in our working manuals and also briefed all our pilots", Tewolde Gebremariam told The Associated Press in an interview in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
"But today we believe that might not have been enough", he said.
Ethiopian Airlines insists the carrier's pilots went through all the extra training required by Boeing and the FAA to fly the 737 Max 8 jet.
The March 10 crash killed people from 35 countries.
Gebremariam said earlier in the week that the training was meant to help crews shift from an older model of the 737 to the Max 8, which entered airline service in 2017.
In a statement, he said pilots were also made aware of an emergency directive issued by the FAA after the Lion Air crash, which killed 189 people.
Ethiopian Airlines has said there is a "clear similarity" between the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, citing preliminary information from the flight data recorder.
Although the causes of the crashes haven't been determined, investigators in the Lion Air disaster have focused on an automated system called MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System).
It is designed to use information from two sensors to help prevent a dangerous aerodynamic stall.
It is not known whether the same flight-control system played a role in the crash of the Ethiopian Airlines jet shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, but regulators say both planes had similar erratic flight paths, an important part of their decision to ground the roughly 370 Max planes around the world.
Both planes flew with erratic altitude changes that could indicate the pilots struggled to control the aircraft.
Shortly after their takeoffs, both crews tried to return to the airports but crashed.
The Vice President of Flight Operations at Ethiopian Airlines, Captain Yohannes Hailemariam, said he did not believe MCAS was the sole problem.
"And MCAS is not a problem that is going to be overcome by an average pilot."
The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the pilots of the doomed Ethiopian plane never trained in a simulator for the Max.
Gebremariam, the Ethiopian Airlines CEO, said Saturday that "it wouldn't have made any difference" as the 737 Max simulator isn't designed to imitate problems in the new jet's flight-control software.
He still didn't say whether the pilots had trained on the simulator.
Boeing's planned software update for the Max must address the problem 100 percent before the aircraft resumes flying, he said, noting that the airline hasn't made a decision on whether or not to cancel orders for Max jets.
Ethiopian Airlines is widely seen as Africa's best-managed airline.
The carrier had been using five of the Max planes and was awaiting delivery of 25 more.
