STORYLINE:
A rare meteorite shower struck Cuba on Friday, startling residents and tourists with a loud boom.
Cuban authorities reported that a large meteor broke up over the western end of the island as it hit the Earth's atmosphere.
Several impacts were reported in the popular tourist spot of the Valley of Vinales, some 200 kilometres (124 miles) west of the capital, Havana.
Valley residents said they were surprised by a loud boom, followed by what appeared to be a sprinkling of rocks falling from the sky, which hit several homes in the area.
Luis Delofeu said he and his wife were outside when a fast moving object, trailing smoke and flames, streaked across the sky, emitting a loud boom overhead.
Explosions were also heard and a smoke trail seen in Havana.
One Spanish tourist in Havana said he and his companions saw a streaking, flaming light shoot across the sky as they were driving in the city, high overhead and on a path towards the nearby ocean.
