"I myself felt insignificant when I was younger. I've been through the metamorphosis of girlhood to womanhood. I think anybody who goes through that deserves a big pat on the back. It's a harrowing journey so I related to that part of it and I also related to the fact that it's such a universal story of, inside all of us, there is a hero. We just have to take that journey inward in order to find her."
15. Medium of "Alita" poster, pull out to wide of red carpet
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Connelly, actress:
"I was excited about the idea that at the center of this story was a young girl who's a hero, who is on a journey to learn about herself and come to understand herself and her own strength and power, who's able to see beauty in places where other people can see no value and who, you know, we just watch her go about changing people all around her and changing ultimately the whole world."
17. Medium of Robert Rodriguez posing for photographers
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Rodriguez, director:
"I found I related to her when I read it and so I thought that's a universal character. I can relate to this 13-year-old girl. It's because of the universal qualities she represents, you know, this character who believes she's insignificant. She wakes up in a trash heap, goes on to find that she actually does possess an inner power and using it wisely can actually affect everyone she meets and change the world."

19. Wide of cast posing for photographers
20. SOUNDBITE (English) James Cameron, co-writer/producer:
The character of Alita starts as an adolescent and she grows during the film to, into full womanhood really and she has to go through all these trials of, 'Who am I? What's my identity? What am I here for?' And all the forces that oppose her. And, you know, I think it's an interesting journey."
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Dua Lipa, recording artist:
"When I watched this movie in London and my sister was there and she's my younger sister, the thing she said she was like, 'Oh, I really want to be her.' And what I really thought was very nice about that was that in every single one of us we want to find like a part of Alita. She's so strong, she's like constantly trying to figure out who she is in order to be able to help others. And I think that's a really wonderful sentiment."
22. SOUNDBITE (English) Ed Skrein, actor:
"You could feel the scope and the sort of size of it, the epic scale of it. But at the same time, it was just a wonderfully intimate experience with just good friends making a movie."

STORYLINE:
'ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL' STARS BRING GIRL POWER TO LOS ANGELES
Stars of new manga move "Alita: Battle Angel" gathered in Los Angeles Tuesday (5 FEBRUARY 2019) to premiere the movie and celebrate its themes of empowerment.
Over 20 years in the making, "Alita" was written and conceived by "Titanic" and "Avatar" filmmaker James Cameron, who handed over the directing reigns to Rodriguez two years ago.
It tells the story of cyborg Alita (Rosa Salazar) who awakens without memory in a dystopic world where she's taken in by a compassionate father figure Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz). As she learns to navigate her new world, she begins to discover latent fighting powers and develops feelings for street-smart Hugo (Keean Johnson).
"I've been through the metamorphosis of girlhood to womanhood," said Salazar on the red carpet. I think anybody who goes through that deserves a big pat on the back. It's a harrowing journey."
Rodriquez also identified with the film's central character.
"I found I related to her when I read it and so I thought that's a universal character. I can relate to this 13-year-old girl."
Despite costing a reported 200 million dollars to make, the money didn't really impact the filmmakers approach, said British actor Ed Skrein.
"You could feel the scope and the sort of size of it, the epic scale of it. But at the same time, it was just a wonderfully intimate experience with just good friends making a movie."
Also at the premiere, star Jennifer Connelly and pop icon Dua Lipa, who recorded a song for the film's soundtrack called "Swan Song."
"Alita: Battle Angel" is showing in numerous territories now.
