Murshidabad's unaccompanied warrior scours plastic waste from the Ganges

Baharampur (Murshidabad, WB): Gautam Chandra Biswas of Murshidabad has made cleaning the distributary of River Ganga  in Murshidabad, his amicable mission.

When dusk falls rapidly, Biswas fills up his little boat with plastic waste ranging from single-use plastic bags to pet jars and plastic bottle, he returns home with the load to diserpse it in the morning.

The most important question that arises is why Biswas does a job which doesn't even pay him, to which he answers “It looks bad. So much of plastic waste floating on the river. Bhagirathi is getting polluted day by day and I just pick them up and try to do my bit in cleaning the river.”

The Centre has been highlighting the negative impact of using single-use plastic materials. Even after not being informed much about the happenings of the world, Biswas seems to have been inspired by Modi's  'Namami Gange' project which aims at making Ganga pollution free.

Gautam Biswas was a fisherman and he worked near Bhagirathi. It was around five years back that while fishing, Gautam noticed that plastic particles as well as discarded pet jar bottles were polluting and harming the river in an unimaginable way. He took not much time to decide and since then, he has been on the mission to clean distributary of River Ganga.

“I have quit fishing now as my age doesn't permit the toil. But, I cannot just sit there and see what is happening with the river. I try to fish out the plastic waste ,” he added.

Local residents don't get tired of heaping praises when it comes to  Gautam Biswas and his selfless dedication towards his work. "Though he doesn't have that much of strength in him, yet he religiously does the task of cleaning the river from plastic waste. I have been seeing him doing this for long. He is in a way helping all of us,” says Ashim Das, a resident of Baharampur.

Mira Biswas, Gautam's neighbour says the former fisherman does not make enough money to run his family by scouring plastic waste from the river.  “It is very hard for him. His trouble increases during the harsh winters. It would be good if he got some help from the authorities”.

Several local clubs and organisations have felicitated Gautam Biswas from time to time in recognition to his efforts, but nothing much has changed for him. SDPO Baharampur Dipanjan Mukhopadhyay says the local civic body will be notified about Gautam's efforts.

“What this person has been doing is not only exemplary, but is a spicemen of encouragement to others,” said the SDPO.

Gautam Biswas continues as the sole crusader against single-use plastic waste on River Bhagirathi.
