ચંદીગઢ: દિગ્ગજ હોકી ખેલાડી અને ગોલ મશીન તરીકે જાણીતા પદ્મશ્રી બલબીર સિંહ સિનિયરનું સોમવાર સવારે નિધન થયું હતું. બલબીર સિંહ સિનિયર 95 વર્ષના હતા. શ્વાસ લેવામાં તકલીફ હોવાની ફરિયાદને કારણે તેમને મોહાલીની ફોર્ટિસ હોસ્પિટલમાં દાખલ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. છેલ્લા 15 દિવસથી તેમની હોસ્પિટલમાં સારવાર ચાલી રહી હતી. જ્યાં તેમણે સોમવારે સવારે 6.17 કલાકે અંતિમ શ્વાસ લીધા હતા.
બલબીર સિંહ સિનિયર તેમના પુત્રી સાથે ચંદીગઢ સેક્ટર-36માં રહેતા હતા. જ્યાં તેમનું અવસાન થયું છે. તેમના અંતિમ સંસ્કાર સેકટર-25ના સ્મશાનગૃહમાં સાંજે 5 કલાકે કરવામાં આવશે. હોકીમાં તેમના નોંધપાત્ર યોગદાન માટે હંમેશા યાદ કરવામાં આવશે.

ભારતે હોકી ઓલિમ્પિક લંડન (1948), હેલસિંકી (1952) અને મેલબોર્ન (1956)માં ગોલ્ડ મેડલ જીત્યો હતો. બલબીર સિંહ આ ટીમનો ભાગ હતા. તેમને હોકીમાં નોંધપાત્ર યોગદાન આપવા બદલ પદ્મશ્રી એવોર્ડથી પણ સન્માનિત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.
ઉલ્લેખનીય છે કે, બલબીર સિંહ સિનિયરને 3 પુત્રો અને એક પુત્રી છે. તેઓ તેમની પુત્રી સાથે રહેતા હતા, જ્યારે ત્રણેય પુત્રો વિદેશમાં રહે છે.
