The curtain came down on a two-day conference on the Middle East in the Polish capital Warsaw on Thursday with the event's sponsor the United States and host Poland equivocating on the issue of Iran.
Instead of putting the spotlight on the Iran issue, which had originally been top of the agenda, the conference centered its discussions instead on topics such as the Yemen crisis, the situation in Syria, the peace process between Palestine and Israel, and the wider humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
After the meeting, Poland and the U.S. announced the forming of seven working groups to tackle problems including terrorism, missile development, and humanitarian issues. But the two sides made little mention about Iran either in the press briefing or in the joint communique after the conference.
Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz suggested initiating a permanent multilateral platform for dialogue on the Middle East, provisionally called "the Warsaw Process."
Originally, the United States, which co-hosted the conference, attempted to rally international support to isolate Iran diplomatically and economically. But the limited backing it gathered pushed Washington to change the conference agenda, saying it will not only focus on Iran but would tackle a wider range of issues in the Middle East region.
However, during the conference on Thursday, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence accused the European Union of bypassing the United States and continuing trade with Iran after France, Germany and Britain announced the establishment of a special trading mechanism with Iran.
The EU responded by saying that the move is to help circumvent the U.S. sanctions against Iran, and stated that the sanctions are not feasible within the legal framework of EU.
