پلائیارکپم گاؤں والوں نے محکمہ ماحولیات کے تعاون سے ایک گروپ بنایا ہے جس میں مقامی کونسلر کے علاوہ دیگر کو شامل کیا گیا ہے۔ گروپ کے ارکان کو کپڑا اور کاغذ کے ذریعہ تھیلی اور بیگ تیار کرنے کی تربیت دی جارہی ہے۔
پلاسٹک سے نجات کےلیے پڈیچیری کا گاؤں مشعل راہ گروپ کی جانب سے تیار کردہ بیاگ اور تھیلیوں کو مقامی دکانات پر تقسیم کیا جاتا ہے تاکہ پلاسٹک کا استعمال کم ہوجائے۔ اس اقدام کو عوام کی جانب سے سراہا جارہا ہے۔
محکمہ ماحولیات کے انجینئر سریش کے مطابق پلائیارکپم گاؤں کو 2010 میں پلاسٹک سے پاک گاؤں قرار دیا گیا تھا اور فی الحال ہم پلاسٹک کے نقصانات اور پلاسٹک کے بجائے کپڑے اور کاغذ کے بیاگ استعمال کرنے سے متعلق شعور بیداری مہم چلائی جارہی ہے۔
مقامی خواتین و نوجوانوں کو سنگل یوز پلاسٹک کے استعمال کے بجائے دیگر اشیا کو استعمال کرنے کی تربیت دی جارہی ہے جبکہ ابھی تک یہ گاؤں پلاسٹک سے پاک ہے اور اس خاصیت کی وجہ سے پلائیارکپم، سیاحتی مقام کے طور پر کافی مشہور ہوا ہے۔

Residents of Pillaiyarkuppam village formed a group of village councilors and members on behalf of the Puducherry environmental department.
Members of this group were trained to produce bags made of cloth and paper which helps in eliminating the single use plastic.
The cloth and paper bags were distributed to local shops and grocery stores. This move was greatly appreciated by people everywhere.
According to Puducherry Government Environmental Engineer Suresh, “Pillaiyarkuppam village was declared as a plastic-free village in 2010 and presently, we are creating awareness among people to use cloth and paper bags instead of plastic bags in grocery stores and tea shops. Local women and youngsters were given proper training for the production of alternatives of single use plastic. As of now this village is free of plastic.”
This initiative of Pillaiyarkuppam villagers have also contributed greatly in making the region a popular tourist destination.
