2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Gyllenhaal, Zawe Ashton, actors, Dan Gilroy, writer-director:
Gyllenhaal: "One day, Dan said , 'you know what I was thinking of – have you ever seen that video of Marlon Brando being interviewed by Ed Sullivan, right?'"
Gilroy: "Yeah, no – Edward R. Murrow -- '62 or something, yeah."
Gyllenhaal: "Edward R. Murrow, oh right. And it's this amazing video and we started deep diving into these male movie stars of a very certain era. And there was this play on sexuality that was very interesting. And I saw a picture of Brando playing with a cat. And he had this Roman haircut and all of a sudden everything kind of clicked. And then we just one day got together at the house and cut it off. And he was like, I love it. OK, see you later."
Gilroy: "It was really bold. Jake had long hair. And she started lopping off. She did not back into it."
Ashton: "He had long hair."
Gilroy: "It was like 3 inches come off and I'm like whoa, man. You can't go back from this. But Kristin is good. She crushed it."
Gyllenhaal: "I really wanted it even shorter but I think that would've been too much to see. But that is the process of working with Dan, is I think risk is reward, regardless of whatever that risk is. Because I think it does make you alive. And I think the process feels alive. And I think that's why the movie itself coming from his mind feels really alive, in a way that is kind of flabbergasting at times and horrifying and also I think ultimately a real comment on who we are right now – all of us. I mean, he's written a parable. This strange, crazy, sort of extraordinary parable about where we are. I think you did the same thing with 'Nightcrawler.'"
Gilroy: "I tried to."
Ashton: "Literally, I was thinking of 'Nightcrawler' as he was speaking."
GIlroy: "And Roman J. Israel Esquire Junior, we tried to do that -- DEA, MBA."

Gyllenhaal: "It was very interesting to be working with a writer who has written – to play something that they've written that has no moral center and then to play someone who has a real moral center."
Gilroy: "The next thing we're doing is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. We're going to explore both sides, we are reviving it.:
Gyllenhaal: "By the way, it's going to be like -- next thing."

'VELVET BUZZSAW' STAR JAKE GYLLENHAAL: 'RISK IS REWARD'
Jake Gyllenhaal says "risk is reward" when it comes to working with writer-director Dan Gilroy on the satirical art world thriller "Velvet Buzzsaw."
Gyllenhaal starred in Gilroy's directorial debut "Nightcrawler" and says he had fun creating the details that make up his snobby art critic in the new film -- including an awkward bowl haircut.
"We started deep diving into these male movie stars of a very certain era. And there was this play on sexuality that was very interesting. And I saw a picture of Brando playing with a cat. And he had this Roman haircut and all of a sudden everything kind of clicked. And then we just one day got together at the house and cut it off. And he was like, I love it. OK, see you later," Gyllenhaal said.

I mean, he's written a parable. This strange, crazy, sort of extraordinary parable about where we are. I think you did the same thing with 'Nightcrawler.'"
That dark thriller about an ambulance chasing journalist went on to become a box office hit and, so, when Gilroy landed on the idea for "Velvet Buzzsaw," there were a lot of film studios who wanted to put their name behind it. Netflix was one of them.
The ensemble film stars John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen and relative newcomer Zawe Ashton. Gilroy wrote the critic character Morf, who is as fluid in his sexuality as he is in his art opinions, specifically for Gyllenhaal.
Will they work together again?
"The next thing we're doing is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. We're going to explore both sides, we are reviving it," Gilroy jokes. "You heard it here first. We start preproduction next week."
Gyllenhaal: "Honestly, I think I might be able to do it."
"Velvet Buzzsaw" is out now on Netflix.
