பிரேசிலியா: பிரேசிலில் கல்விக்கு ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுவந்த நிதியை கணிசமாக குறைந்துள்ள அந்நாட்டு அரசுக்கு எதிராக ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர்.

பிரேசிலில் கல்விக்கு ஒதுக்கப்பட்டு வந்த சுமார் ரூ. 618 கோடி நிதியை ரத்து செய்து அந்நாட்டு அரசு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. இது கடந்த மாதம் முதல் நடைமுறைக்கு வந்தது.

பிரேசில் அரசின் இந்த முடிவுக்கு எதிராக மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் என ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் சாவோ பாலோ, ரியோ டி ஜெனிரோ ஆகிய நகரங்களில் போராட்டத்தில் களமறிங்கியுள்ளனர்.

இதுகுறித்து போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட மாணவி ஒலிவெரா சாண்டோஸ் பேசுகையில், " இந்த நாட்டின் எதிர்காலமே கல்வியை நம்பிதான் உள்ளது. ஆகையால் தற்போது நடைபெற்றுவரும் போராட்டம் மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள், தொழிலாளர்கள் என பல்வேறு தரப்பினரும் வீதிகளில் இறங்கியுள்ளதை அரசுக்கு உணர்த்தும்" என்றார்.

"I am sure that when the government sees the population in the street, knows that the project (budget cuts) is unpopular, that it will not be accepted and that we will resist inside and outside the university. I think the strategy and our goal is to make the people and the workers understand that it is in their interests to defend a public university and not a university that meets the needs of the market (in reference to the proposal of the government to allow private companies to contribute to the budget of the universities)."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of students and teachers protested across Brazil on Tuesday against federal cuts in education spending.
Union leaders called for a strike in the education sector, denouncing funding cuts from elementary schools to higher public education and plans to open federal universities to private investment.
The government says it is implementing the cuts across the board and in an equal way.
Hundreds of students, teachers and supporters in Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro took to the streets in protest denouncing the cutbacks.
"Education is the future of our country so I think it is important to come here and protest to send the message to the government that the students are in the street, the teachers are in the street and the workers are in the street," university student Eduardo de Oliveira Santos, 23, said.
Online news portal G1 registered events in 72 cities Tuesday but the turnout did not match the huge crowds that joined in similar protests in May.
The latest cuts of 348 million reals (about $87 million) were imposed last month, targeting school textbooks.
The education ministry had already announced a 30% cut to university funding and blocked all forthcoming scholarships for master's and doctoral students.
