2008 ഓഗസ്‌റ്റില്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ദേശീയ ടീമിലെത്തിയ കോലി പതിനൊന്ന് വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കിപ്പുറം 239 ഏകദിനങ്ങളിലും, 82 ടെസ്‌റ്റുകളിലും, 72 ടി ട്വന്‍റികളിലും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കുപ്പായമണിഞ്ഞു. 1988 നവംബര്‍ അഞ്ചിന് ഡല്‍ഹിയിലെ പഞ്ചാബി കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് കോലിയുടെ ജനനം. മൂന്നാം വയസില്‍ ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ബാറ്റ് കയ്യിലെടുത്ത കോലിയുടെ ഭാവി ക്രിക്കറ്റില്‍ തന്നെയാണെന്ന് മനസിലാക്കിയ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍, അതേ വഴിയില്‍ തന്നെ കുഞ്ഞു കോലിയെ നടത്തി. 2002 ല്‍ ഡല്‍ഹി അണ്ടര്‍ -15 ടീമില്‍ ഇടം നേടിയ വിരാട് തന്‍റെ കരിയര്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു. 2006 ല്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ അണ്ടര്‍ - 19 ടിമിലെത്തിയ കോലി രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ ടീമിന്‍റെ ക്യാപ്‌റ്റനായി. 2008ല്‍ ലോക കീരിടം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ അണ്ടര്‍ 19 ടീമിന്‍റെ അമരത്ത് കോലിയായിരുന്നു.
