দীর্ঘ অসুস্থতার পর আজ সকালে শেষ নিশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন পরিচালক লেখক অভিনেতা গিরীশ কারনাড। তাঁর প্রয়াণে শোকস্তব্ধ গোটা বিনোদনজগত। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদি, কেরলের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী পিনারাই বিজয়ন সহ বিনোদনজগতের সকলেই তাঁকে শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়েছে।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদি গিরীশ কারনাডকে শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে লেখেন, "বৈচিত্রময় অভিনয়ের জন্য গিরীশ কারনাডকে সবসময় মনে করা হবে। তাঁর আত্মার শান্তিকামনা করি।"

অন্যদিকে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্য়োপাধ্যায় শোকবার্তায় বলেন, "বিশিষ্ট নাট্যব্যক্তিত্ব ও চলচ্চিত্র অভিনেতা গিরীশ কারনাডের মৃত্যুতে আমি গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করছি। আজ ৮১ বছর বয়সে বেঙ্গালুরুতে তিনি শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেছেন। কন্নড় ও হিন্দি নাটক ও চলচ্চিত্র জগতে তিনি দীর্ঘসময় ধরে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন। জ্ঞানপীঠ, পদ্মশ্রী, পদ্মভূষণ ও অন্যান্য পুরস্কারে সম্মানিত গিরীশ কারনাডের মৃত্যু কন্নড় তথা সমগ্র ভারতের চলচ্চিত্র ও নাট্য জগতের এক অপূরণীয় ক্ষতি।আমি গিরীশ কারনাডের পরিবার-পরিজন ও অসংখ্য অনুরাগীদের প্রতি আন্তরিক সমবেদনা জানাচ্ছি ।"

'নিশান্ত', 'স্বামী' সহ একাধিক ছবিতে শাবানা আজ়মির সঙ্গে কাজ করেছেন গিরীশ কারনাড। আজ তাঁর প্রয়াণে শাবানা লেখেন, "গভীরভাবে দুঃখিত গিরীশ কারনাডের প্রয়াণের খবরে। এখনও পর্যন্ত ওনার পরিবারের সঙ্গে কথা বলে উঠতে পারিনি। ৪৩ বছরের বন্ধুত্ব আমাদের।"
