وفاقی پراسیکیوٹر کے دفتر کے ترجمان ایرک وان ڈیوس نے کہا کہ سوشل میڈیا پر ذمہ داری کا دعویٰ پوسٹ کیے جانے کے بعد شوٹنگ کے لیے ممکنہ دہشت گردی کے محرکات پر تحقیقات کا مرکز تھا۔ یہ مبینہ طور پر شخص اسلامک اسٹیٹ سے متاثر ہونے کا دعویٰ کرتا ہے۔ وان ڈیوس نے کہاکہ متاثرین کی سویڈش قومیت کو ممکنہ مقصد کے طور پر پیش کیا گیا تھا۔ سویڈن میں رہنے والے ایک عراقی مہاجر کی طرف سے اسلامی عسکریت پسند گروپوں کی دھمکیوں کے نتیجے میں سویڈن نے اگست میں اپنے دہشت گردی کے الرٹ کو دوسرے اعلیٰ ترین سطح پر پہنچا دیا تھا۔
