RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Los Angeles, 2 February 2019
1. Wide arrivals area for DGA Awards
2. Close DGA signage
3. Wide Bradley Cooper on arrivals line
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Bradley Cooper, director-actor:
(Reporter: You guys are performing at the Oscars. Do you get to pick where in the show you perform?")
"Not where in the show, no, no – not where in the show. Well, the whole thing about the movie was that we sang everything live and it was all real. We are going to maintain the integrity of that. So I think it might be a bit of a unique way of doing this song, I hope, that's really raw."
5. Wide Cooper, directors Adam McKay, Alfonso Cuaron on arrivals line
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Alfonso Cuaron, director:
"Even before the event happens, we are hanging out together and we're just chatting. It's such an amazing group of people. That's the thing that made me – and I think it's something that the media has turned into something that's like a competition. When in reality, inside, from the standpoint of filmmakers, it's a blast. It's a celebration. And we are rooting for each other. And just having those conversations and hearing just how much you have in common with the process of others – and how different it is at the same time. That's always the thing of oh, I wish I could do what he does. So it's great."
7. Medium Spike Lee talks with reporter
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Spike Lee, director:
"We had some giants on the stage. So it was good to see us exchange ideas and listen to each other. And I learned a lot of stuff too today."
(Reporter: "What did you learn?")
Lee: "The stuff that Alfonso was saying – just, you listen, you can learn. I was picking up tips."
9. Wide Adam McKay talks with reporter
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Adam McKay, director:
(Reporter: "Do you have spies out there that are going to get back to you and tell you Cheney saw it?")
"I'm waiting to hear. I know. I don't think he'll watch it. I think the best shot is his wife Lynne. I don't think she can resist. But we'll see. I'm sure whenever she does watch it, we'll hear some sort of scream. It will be like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars saying 'I feel a great disturbance in the Force.' But no, I haven't heard anything yet. And I'm curious if his daughter Mary watches it as well."
11. Wide Cooper talks with reporter
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Bradley Cooper, director-actor:
"I can tell you what inspired the idea of the muse and the love story was 'Life Lessons,' a short that Martin Scorsese directed – part of a 'New York Stories' film. That was something that I watched endlessly and actually showed it to Stefani and we watched together and there was just something about the way that Nick Nolte looked at her and she to him. There was something about the way that Scorsese shot that. Actually I had the opportunity to talk to him about it. I was trying to figure out how he did a couple of these shots. But every director that I've worked with or every movie I've seen has influenced how I tell a story cinematically."
13. Wide Cuaron on arrivals line
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Alfonso Cuaron, director:
"In the past, I have been very conscious about my references. In this one, I was trying to say OK, I'm not going to take any reference, I'm not going to do any homages. I want to try to do something pure that comes directly from my soul. Yes, but my soul is full of cinema. And I didn't notice that until probably later on. And it's through critics and cinephiles that started mentioning the references of other films. And I have to say, I owe them. Because that's also who I am."
15. Medium Adam McKay talks with reporter
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Adam McKay, director:
"There's so many influences. I go all the way back to the 1960s with Putney Swope. I look at '24 Hour Party People' – that's a movie that's like 10 years old. And then I look back to make theater roots as well – Story Theatre in Chicago, everything kind of combines. Most of all, we just live in insane times. So I really had to reach and really look to tell a different way of telling stories. That was really where it came from."

STORYLINE:
BRADLEY COOPER PROMISES 'RAW' PERFORMANCE OF 'SHALLOW' AT OSCARS
Bradley Cooper is promising a "unique" and "raw" performance of "Shallow" at the Academy Awards.
The director and star of "A Star Is Born" was at the DGA Awards on Saturday (2 FEBRUARY) in Los Angeles, where he was one of five feature film nominees alongside Alfonso Cuaron, Spike Lee, Adam McKay and Peter Farrelly.
The U.S. film academy announced on Friday (1 FEBRUARY) that he and Lady Gaga would perform at the Academy Awards later this month.
"The whole thing about the movie was that we sang everything live and it was all real. We are going to maintain the integrity of that. So I think it might be a bit of a unique way of doing this song, I hope, that's really raw," Cooper said.
The five DGA nominees shared stories at a symposium earlier in the day.
"Even before the event happens, we are hanging out together and we're just chatting," said Cuaron, director of awards front-runner "Roma." "It's something that the media has turned into something that's like a competition. When in reality, inside, from the standpoint of filmmakers, it's a blast. It's a celebration. And we are rooting for each other."
"BlackKklansman" director Spike Lee said of the discussion: "We had some giants on the stage. So it was good to see us exchange ideas and listen to each other. And I learned a lot of stuff today. ... I was picking up tips."
"Vice" director Adam McKay said he expects at least Lynne Cheney to see his satirical biopic of Dick Cheney -- eventually.
"I don't think she can resist. But we'll see. I'm sure whenever she does watch it, we'll hear some sort of scream. It will be like Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars saying 'I feel a great disturbance in the Force.' But no, I haven't heard anything yet. And I'm curious if his daughter Mary watches it as well," he said.
The directors also spoke about their strongest influences as they were crafting the nominated films.
"I can tell you what inspired the idea of the muse and the love story was 'Life Lessons,' a short that Martin Scorsese directed – part of a 'New York Stories' film," Cooper said. "That was something that I watched endlessly and actually showed it to Stefani and we watched together and there was just something about the way that Nick Nolte looked at her and she to him. There was something about the way that Scorsese shot that. Actually I had the opportunity to talk to him about it. I was trying to figure out how he did a couple of these shots. But every director that I've worked with or every movie I've seen has influenced how I tell a story cinematically."
Cuaron said he tried to rid "Roma" of homages to past films -- but didn't succeed.
"In the past, I have been very conscious about my references. In this one, I was trying to say OK, I'm not going to take any reference, I'm not going to do any homages. I want to try to do something pure that comes directly from my soul. Yes, but my soul is full of cinema," he said. "And I didn't notice that until probably later on. And it's through critics and cinephiles that started mentioning the references of other films. And I have to say, I owe them. Because that's also who I am."
