Timeline: Accidents of plane crashing into residential areas

A passenger plane belonging to state-run Pakistan International Airlines crashed near the southern port city of Karachi on Friday, killing all 107 passengers and crew. There are many such incidents of aircraft crashes previously which lead to the death of people boarded in the aircraft as well the once residing close to the runways.

Hyderabad (Telangana): The most unfortunate part of the crash of the passenger plane Airbus A320 belonging to state-run Pakistan International Airlines near the southern port city of Karachi on Friday was that it crashed in a residential area and just a minute before the landing, killing all 107 passengers and crew.

Witnesses said the Airbus A320 appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing in a residential area near Jinnah International Airport. The residential area on the edge of the airport known as Model Colony is a poor area and heavily congested.

  • 16th of January, 2017: A Turkish cargo plane crashed into a village near Kyrgyzstan's main airport, killing at least 38 people including 13 children and destroying houses after it had attempted landing in thick fog.
  • 30th of June, 2015: An Indonesian military plane crashed shortly after takeoff and came down in a residential area in Medan on the island of Sumatra, killing its 122 passengers and some 20 people on the ground. Several buildings were also torn apart.
  • 30th of November, 2012: A cargo plane crashed near the Republic of Congo's Brazzaville's airport, killing 32 people. All seven passengers were killed after the plane skidded off the runway when it landed in stormy weather, demolishing several homes before crashing into a ravine. The other victims were on the ground.
  • 03rd of June, 2012: A devastating crash in Nigeria's largest city Lagos kills 159 people including six people on the ground. The passenger jet came down in a neighbourhood in the north of the city after declaring a "mayday" and reporting both its engines having failed.
  • 21st of March, 2011: A cargo plane crashes down into a residential area of Pointe-Noire, the Republic of Congo's economic capital, killing 23 people including 14 on the ground.
  • 05th of September, 2005: Mandala Airlines Flight 91 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight that originated from Polonia International Airport in Medan, Indonesia to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. The flight crashed into a heavily populated residential area, seconds after taking off in Medan. There were 149 fatalities.
  • 12th of November, 2001: An American Airlines A-300 bound for the Dominican Republic crashed after takeoff in a residential area of the borough of Queens, New York, killing all 260 people on board and at least five people on the ground.
  • 04th of October, 1992: El Al Flight 1862, a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft of the state-owned Israeli airline El Al, crashed into the Groeneveen and Klein-Kruitberg flats in the Bijlmermeer neighbourhood of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. A total of 43 people were officially reported killed, including the aircraft’s three crew members, a non-revenue passenger in a jump seat, and 39 people on the ground.
  • 03rd of September, 1989: A Cubana de Aviación Ilyushin Il-62M crashed shortly after takeoff from José Martí International Airport in bad weather. The aircraft crashed into a residential area. 126 people on board and 45 people on the ground, were killed.
