West Bengal: ED team attacked during raid in TMC leader's house

ED sleuths were at TMC leader Shahjahan Shaikh's house at Sandeshkhali at 7 am on Friday to start a raid in the ration scam. But despite knocking on his doors repeatedly, they didn't get any response. Left with no options, they asked the Central security Forces to break the lock of the house. However, the sleuths and the security team weer taken aback when an agitated crowd pounced on them.

Kolkata: An Enforcement Directorate team which went to raid TMC leader Shahjahan Shaikh's house in Sandeshkhali in the infamous ration scam, was assaulted by miscreants allegedly at the behest of the latter.

Cars and cameras of some media persons were also attacked. Shaikh is the party president, Block No. 1, Nagaland in Uttar 24 Parganas with additional charge of fisheries in the Zilla Parishad.

The agency is probing the infamous ration scam in which state minister Jyotipriya Mallick has been arrested.

ED officials reached Shahjahan Shaikh's house at Sandeshkhali at 7 am on Friday to begin the raid. However, despite knocking on his doors repeatedly, there was no response. With no other options in hand, the sleuths asked the accompanying Central Security Forces to break the lock of the house.

But much to their dismay, they were suddenly attacked by an agitated crowd comprising hundreds of TMC followers. Peeved at their presence, Shahjahan's loyalists rushed towards the ED officials and security forces.

ED teams on Friday have conducted raids at several places in the ration scam.

State BJP leaders were quick to react to the attack on probe agency officials by taking pot shots at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the reign of goons in the state.

Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha speaking to news agency ANI said, "Shahjahan Sheikh is a don of the Sandeshkhali area. He is also a TMC leader. There are a lot of murder cases against him. The police do not take any action because he is a TMC leader...We condemn the incident & action should be taken."
