Kannauj: Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj is the latest district added to the lists of places where bodies of suspected Covid patients were found buried in the sand along the Ganga river.

A recent case has been reported from Mahadevi Ganga Ghat of the district where nearly 50 bodies have surfaced.

The saddening part is that as the havoc continues to batter the northern states, the Covid infection is rapidly heading towards rural areas and nobody has remained untouched by the misery.

Covid deaths are surging amid lack of proper treatment.

Under such circumstances, to avoid the excessive expenditure cost over the cremation, people have started burying the bodies on the banks of the rivers.

The Mahadevi Ganga Ghat incident came to light after heavy rains washed the banks and bodies emerged on the land surface.

In an exclusive video captured by ETV Bharat, a person wearing a PPE kit was seen near the site where few people were digging a grave to bury a body on the bank along the Ganga river. It is suspected people were trying to dispose of the body of a Covid infected patient.

There is huge pressure on crematoriums. This can be one of the reasons why the bodies are being buried near rivers as cremations are witnessing long delays and bodies pile up outside the crematorium. People are not even getting a place to burn pyres in the crematorium.

According to reports, Mahadevi Ganga Ghat has cremated about 2,000 people within a month.

More bodies will emerge during the rainy following a rise in the water level of the river Ganges which will eventually pollute the water body resulting in more spread of the infection.

After the incident attracted media attention, the administration swung into action and ADM Gajendra Singh constituted a three-member team to investigate the matter and submit a report within three days.

The team includes Sadar SDM Gaurav Shukla, Sadar CO Shiv Pratap Singh and ACMO Dr JP Salonia.
