Ludhiana: Upset with her daughter-in-law for not bearing a son, an elderly woman residing in Ludhiana's Panchsheel colony burnt the hand of her two-year-old granddaughter, when her mother was not in the house.
As soon as the girl's mother reached the house, she rescued her daughter and immediately took her to the civil hospital in the city.
"The condition of the girl is stable. A case was registered against Darshana Rani, who committed the heinous crime on the complaint of her daughter-in-law Sangeeta," said Ramesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Jodhewal Basti police station.
"The incident came to light when the mother of the minor filed an FIR against her mother-in-law for burning her daughter’s hand on 11th March in Ludhiana," added Kumar.
Acting on Sangeeta's complaint, police arrested Rani on Saturday morning, a source close to the complainant said.
"My mother-in-law didn't like my daughter Rosal as she always wanted a boy. This is the reason she wanted to sell away my daughter and initially, we had a frequent quarrel over the issue. After facing several unsuccessful attempts of not being able to sell my daughter, she took the extreme step," said Sangeeta.
Husband of the complainant is a railway employee and apart from Rosal, Sangeeta is the mother of a 10-year-old boy Piyush, according to information received on Saturday.
