The elephant eventually walked up to the Velliyar River and stood there with her mouth and trunk in the water, perhaps for some relief from the unbearable pain.

A team of doctors and forest officials reached the spot after getting information from the locals, but the animal denied to get rescued.

After the post-mortem, forest officials cremated the animal deep inside the forest.

The incident left people including celebrities and animal activists outraged across the nation.

BJP MP and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi has termed the death of the animal as 'murder'. She also said that Malappuram is the "most violent district" in the nation as the place is very famous for animal cruelty.

The BJP MP has also demanded immediate removal of the Forest Secretary and the resignation of the Minister for Wildlife Protection in the state.

Talking about the development in the case, an FIR has also been lodged against unidentified people under relevant sections of the Wild Life Protection Act over the killing of the pregnant tusker.
