Gadag: Two days after ETV Bharat reported the plight of a Karnataka woman, who mortgaged her ‘mangalsutra’ to buy a television set so that her children could continue studies from Doordarshan, not only she was given her mangalsutra back but also received financial assistance from some locals and politicians.

The incident that took place in Radder Naganur village in Karnataka's Gadag district was brought to the notice of tehsildar after ETV Bharat narrated the ordeal of Kasturi on July 30, following which he sent village officials to look into the matter.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the person who had lent money to Kasturi in exchange of her 12-gram gold mangalsutra, decided to give it back to the woman and asked the family to return the money whenever they can.

However, few locals pooled in money for the family and some politicians also pitched in. Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed sent Rs 50,000 and state minister CC Patil sent Rs 20,000 to help the family.

Officers of the District Child Protection Unit, who paid a visit to her home, assured her that she will be provided Rs 1000 every month for three years.

Kasturi, who is a mother of two, purchased a television set against her 'mangalsutra' for Rs 14,000. She bought the TV after her children's school teachers asked them to attend classes via the television set.

Kasturi is a daily wage worker, who was unable to look for a job amid coronavirus pandemic.
