New Delhi: Fraternity movement, an independent student organization on Friday demanded a judicial probe into the killing of two civilians in Assam's Darang district. Holding the placards in their hands, the protesters gheraoed the Assam Bhawan in New Delhi before they were detained by the security forces.

"This is injustice against the marginalised section of our people. We demand a judicial inquiry into the firing incident where two people were shot dead by police personnel. We also demand strong action against the erring police personnel," said Shamsher Ibrahim, national president of the Fraternity Movement.

Meanwhile, security forces have detained few protesters after they staged a protest demonstration against the killing that took place on Wednesday.

Notably, on Wednesday an eviction drive by the civil administration turned violent in Darrang leaving two civilians dead and over ten security personnel injured.

It may be mentioned here that 77,420 bighas of government land were under illegal encroachment under the Sipajhar revenue circle in Darrang district. The BJP-led Assam government had started a massive eviction drive in June 2021 and cleared about 8,000 bighas of land.

Following the death of two people in the eviction drive on Thursday, the opposition parties criticised the State government for police brutality.
